I call them Oflin, and they're still going to be about 2 1/2 tall. Humans bastardized their name to elfling, and eventually to Hafling. They don't mind much though, they've been called far worse.
They could have just as easily tried to meld gnomes and halflings into something unique to go along with their other new races but they went for something more familiar and within their IP. They -are- Kender in all but name to me. I wouldn't be shocked to see the racial talents that one can add to 'kender' in the PHB could enhance them in ways people are saying they are lacking from the DL version.
Don't care. I'm just happy that they're taking a bigger step away from Tolkien and coming into their own as a marriage between (imo) two good ideas.
Halflings = great, but too Tolkien
Kender = great, but too DragonLance
Well what would be best is an option for: Take that piece of Kender flavor away from Halflings, release kender now in the 4e PHB, and release Tolkeinesque halflings in a later book. That not being an option, I voted to call 'em kender. I think of a race of kleptomanics of that height, and I think Kender.
I voted Kender, but what about Hin? That's the name that Ed Greenwood came up for them in Gaz8: The Five Shires for Mystara, and which then migrated over to his Forgotten Realms.
