It's a win situation for almost everyone (except retailers). Arc Dream & Pagan are not big operations and from reading Dennis' article it seems they feel this is the only way to get material out without them having to 'risk their shirts'.
The amount, $20,000 (US) is not an inconsiderable sum and they achieved it handsomely. It makes me wonder if other RPG publishers would be increasingly tempted to use such a means for 'Special/Speculative' projects?
