no cross-class skills?

Great review Gurus. I've been reading the CoC rulebook and I agree with everything you've saidexcept for one thing. Technically, there are class and cross-class skills (called core and noncore respectively). Each victi...err, character (I liked that, Gurus) gets to pick 12 core skills which you can obtain just like class skills in D&D. Overall a very accurate review. thanks.

I don't mind that kind of stuff but it seems gratuitous and of little to no value to have that in there - especially since I can only assume that it must come from an HPL derived work rather than the man himself.
Well, you've got to keep in mind that Lovecraft by no means created the entire Mythos himself. Besides R E Howard and C A Smith, with whom he regularly swapped settings and characters, many other authors have contributed to to the Mythos; Lovecraft himself often created derivative works of material other authors had in turn derived from his original Mythos work. Heck, ol' H P didn't even come up with the idea of creating a fictional pantheon himself, and certainly didn't coin the term "Cthulhu Mythos".

This isn't a shot at th' man, by the way. I'm just pointing out that it's singularly futile to try to be a Lovecraft purist - even Lovecraft himself wasn't a Lovecraft purist. ;)

That was such a cool description of Shubby! It warms the cockles of my tentacle-porn loving heart. I can't wait to get my hands on it and start working on that William Burroughs campaign setting I've been wanting to do. Only 4 days till my birthday and I'll have it. :)

Ahhh, another healthy thread cut off at the stem and transplanted over to the D20 System Games forum to wither and die... ;)

I could not agree more. This has been happening MUCH more lately. So let me get this straight - topics about Dr. Midnight's love life is OK in the General Role-Playing forum, but one about a d20 review is NOT? (Not meant as a swipe towards Dr. Midnight, btw).

Hurm.

That's a good point and I agree with you. However, my point was that the inclusion of that content just doesn't seem necessary. I mentioned that it's not part of the core stories (the HPL stuff) just to highlight the fact that it wasn't necessary. I don't think that Hentaithulhu really adds much to a mythos game myself, but maybe other people enjoy playing RPG's that involve sexual violation by amorphous appendages. To each their own I suppose.

Hey, shorn of our characteristic Puritan outrage, is tentacle-rape really worse than slow multilation, insidious possession of the mind, soul-shattering psychosis, or any of a dozen other horrible fates that Lovecraft's characters regularly suffered, albeit often "off-camera"?

The purpose of dropping the lovecraft mythos (at least in my opinion) into any game is to incorporate the feeling of something so alien or wrong that it defies rational thought or logic. Whether you are a fan of the sexual imagry of Shub Niggaruth or not, you must admit it does fit the image very well.

And as for the "wither and die" part....

I greatly respect Morrus. He has made a great site with viewing in the thousands every day. It is through his site that my site gets any attention at all, and I am thankful for that.

If he believes that a discussion of a review belongs here versus general RPG discussion, then so be it. It just kinda sad that the viewership of this forum is very weak in comparison to the General Forum, and therefore the healthy level of discussion seen earlier will not be maintained.

Ah well.

Kelly, Wolfspider -

We don't prohibit crossposting. That means that you should put Cthulhu d20 threads in here, and then feel free to provide a link and brief description in the General Discussion forum. That's probably not a problem.

Also, always make sure you tell Morrus about a review (so that he can post it on the main news page).

It's a little weird; "isn't it silly to crosspost instead of just posting there in the first place?" A little; but we want more traffic in here, and that's a good way to start it going.

Kelly, good site, by the way; and it's good to see you posting here too!
