Calling all Europeans...

Malessa

First Post
Hello,

My husband has always toyed around with the idea of us retiring to Europe some day. Recently, I started taking the idea seriously. Even more recently, I brought up the idea of not waiting until retirement.

Here's my first step in the "move to Europe" research...

In the U.S., we have local "chambers of commerce" that supply all kinds of information about cost of living, job opportunities, housing, property taxes, education, utilities, local laws, shopping, night life, etc. that can be contacted if you want to consider moving to a new area. They'll send you a packet of pamphlets, brochures, addresses and phone numbers.

Is there any kind of "chamber of commerce" equivalent overseas? Specifically, we're thinking about an area such as a suburb of London, or perhaps Edinborough. Yes... I realize that's VERY vague, and not even in the same country. But, like I said, this is step 1 of testing the waters.

Anyway, what I'm looking for is very specific information on living in a primarily English speaking country... England and Scotland come to mind first, because they're the most familiar to us. Perhaps New Zealand (is that Europe?), the Netherlands, Switzerland??? Can anybody help me out with either internet links or mailing addresses for gathering the type of information I'm looking for?

I guess the most important would revolve around employment, cost of living, and school for our two boys. Help appreciated!

I would write to the British embassy, (or Dutch, or Swiss). They should be able to help you, even if only giving you the addresses of people who do have the information.

New Zealand is exactly on the other side of the world from Europe, about 18000 Km's away, or a good 24 hours of flying. I suggest you purchase an atlas and look in it thoroughly, because the climate IS going to be important, and so is other stuff you'll be able to find in there (population density etc).

Switzerland is not part of the EU and has very stiff immigration laws. For the Netherlands, go to

... and if you have a job, it will be very easy to move in. Note that the Netherlands is a very extreme country in it's liberalism. if you are strict christians, the Netherlands might not be the country for you (Legal abortion, euthanasia, drinking age of 16, legal marihuana, gay marriages, legal prostitution complete with a union etc. etc.).

Mental note: New Zealand is NOT Europe. Gotcha.

lol, i once had to speak to a teachers conference. i got up in front of 1500 teachers and told the it was time for the state educational system to change its dominant paradigm.

except i pronounced it "pare - uh- dij- um"

if you are gonna gaff, do it in front of friends and not strangers :)

Well, there's the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce & Enterprise and the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry if that helps. I'm not sure how much use these'll be, or if they're equivalent of the American ones.

Employment would vary depending on your field. Cost of living will also very depending on what you want, but cars and electronic equipment is often more expensve in the UK, and AFAIK houses are too (I don't check European prices often, but OTOH UK prices are cheaper than the ones I saw in San Fransisco). Education is more or less free if you don't count tax as payment. Which would be something else to consider if you're coming to the UK. Taxes are MUCH higher, but luckily there is no Sales Tax! You can read prices and not have to do a complicated problem to work out the cost!

Have you visited any Europian country?

It might be wise to travel around a bit an get the feel for some places.

Jobs does depend on your fields of expertise.

Language: english speaking countrieswill be basically: Britain and Ireland. But in the netherlands most people do speak english (or at least try to, they have been getting english classes from the age of 10) but if you work here you do want to learn some dutch.

Cant really help you on adresses. The dutch embassy is a good place to start.

Good luck and if you have more specific dutch questions you can always email to me (or Rav, im sure he wouldn't mind)

There are chambers of commerce, as Sixchan noted, but I don't know if they are the same as USA's ones. I'd suggest you to visit a couple of countries personally before moving anyway.

I haven't been out of the country. My husband has been to England, Scotland and Greece (and Mexico). He liked Greece, but England and Scotland really got to him. He's always talked about wanting to live there.
