Calling all Gamers! I need some names that will, someday, destroy the world!

Hello!

I'm in need of your help, Enworld. I'm starting up a campaign in a couple days, and I need a list of names. Not just any names, no- names that will someday destroy the world.

Allow me to explain. The PCs will, over the course of the first adventure, come across an extremely powerful magical artifact dubbed simply "The List". At first glance, it just looks like a list of names- but the catch, revealed to the trained diviner, is that this isn't just a list of names. Every name on the list is that of a person (or organization, or creature, etc.) that, if it is not killed or somehow completely incapacitated, will, someday, cause a chain of events that will eventually lead to the world's destruction. The PCs will find this list, and, after learning its purpose, proceed to systematically hunt down and kill or otherwise thwart these plans, thus setting up a simple framework for the campaign (with each adventure focusing on eliminating one or more names from the list).

When I first came up with this idea, I planned on the list itself being blank when first found, and later on names would start popping up (as I came up with adventures to fit them). However, it occured to me that it would work better if, instead, the list started off with a bunch (say, 15-20) of names pre-written on it, to give the PCs a bit of a starting point (and to make it seem less like a "let's see what hook the DM can come up with this week" game). Also, I'd like for at some point new names to be added to the list (as, of course, killing certain evil masterminds or whatnot will undoubtedly spawn copycat masterminds that wouldn't have popped up if the original had been left unchecked), and that works better if the names are there from the get-go. And, of course, it occured to me, how easy is it to find a good adventure, and simply replace the big bad's name with that of one on the list?

I could probably come up with a bunch of random names on my own, but I thought I was bound to get some interesting and original names if I asked here. So, please! Help me out! Give me some names! These could be individual people's names (such as Loris Raknian or Aelvyn T'irw'iarran or something), the names of organizations (such as The Order of the Ashen Brand or The Defias Gang), or, one idea I've been toying with, the name of a race of beings (such as, say Black Dragons- requiring the PCs to hunt down and kill every black dragon in existence, or something equally epic).

So let's get Listing!

* Sa-vess, the medusa
* The Red Griffon (possibly an actual griffon with red pigmentation, or a title given to someone?)
* Pern Cobblesmith (or some equally common last name, i.e. this could be any random john doe in any random town making for a lot of trouble finding him as well as ethical choice to figure what to do with a common man who is not extradorinary in himself but somehow connected and needs to be incapacitated)
* Anastasia Renald (who turns out to be some queen, or some other high ranking and difficult to get to person. may or may not be 'evil' depends on the flow of your game if you've done too many ethical choices already or just want to have a 'kill her' type thing - she herself directly gets someone to do something, or she is the reason her husband, the king, is convinced to take some action that would prove to be detremental in the long term future despite its immediate rewards)
* The Griffon Riders (some sort of griffon riding knight group)
* The Onyx Blades (a mercenary group or theives guild)
* Orcus (okay, maybe not :-D )
* Jade Cult (who do all cults need black/blood names? :) - they follow a twisted version of a stone/earth god. And they get their name for thier leader's abiilty to turn people to jade statues (i.e. "turn to stone" effect but it's jade instead of just stone))
* To be a real-mean-DM, stick the name of a PC's father/mother/aunt/uncle/caretaker on there... :)
* Zarthanax (a devil or demon of some sort, OR a fallen angel that now serves evil)
* Branka Underhammer (a dwarf/dark dwarf/ or other underground person - just an excuse to have an underdark themed adventure)
* (Some last name which turns out to be the entire current royal bloodline of Frost Giants) (aka an excuse to have a tundra-environment adventure where they either need to get another frost giant in control of the throne or just wipe out the current bloodline)
* Morrin Metis (a spellcaster with very sand/desert themed spells) (i.e. an excuse to have a desert-themed adventure)
* (random name) - who it turns out was killed a long time ago but the pieces of his body are reanimated to be undead so there are maybe 2 or 3 pieces of him they have to find and kill again (treat each body part as a lich or some other intelligent undead that is controlling other undead mooks - every campaign needs an undead villian at some point :))

okay so this may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's the type of stuff that came to mind when i read your post.
basically i thought of types of situations that might be fun (i.e. something tundra themed, something desert themed, something with moral considerations, some iconic villian types like devils and undead, and then thought how they'd play out in this scenario).

Lord Sir Percevilius L'Enfant, Earl of Hommlet, Steward of Moathouse, Marshall of the Borderlands, and Grandmaster of The Most Holy and Knightly Spartan Order of St. Charon the Ferryman.

i too like the ethical question of is it acceptable to get rid of someone simply because they might do somethign later

kalgorith- mercenary blademaser working for a wizard who is secretly doing experiments on him giving him extraordinary powers but driving him mad. possibly god complex

mathias red

nazzkraig

alistair smith

maybe an npc theyve met and have interactions with is on the list

this is just an idea but at the end it would be kinda interesting if their names appeared on the list. kinda by killing all these people theyve set themselves up to destroy everything? probably wouldnt go over too well. maybe just one guy sees their names and has to decide if his friends are more important than the world. or each player only sees one name either their own or another players.

Also, I'd like for at some point new names to be added to the list (as, of course, killing certain evil masterminds or whatnot will undoubtedly spawn copycat masterminds that wouldn't have popped up if the original had been left unchecked), and that works better if the names are there from the get-go.

Considering this, I would make one of the player-characters a target, perhaps at a later point in time. Either have the PC's specific name pop up on the list, or one of your organizations (your Wizard's guild or your Cleric's church, for example) or their race (Half-elves!).

Also, if you think they can handle it without completely freaking out, I'd strongly consider putting the name of one of your players on the list... Just because it'd be super creepy.

Great ideas all around, everyone!

Yes, I plan on making the players ask a lot of ethical questions as this campaign goes on. I also plan on making it apparent that this artifact was not created with a particular agenda in mind- "ending the world" very well may be a good thing, depending on the circumstances. I'm planning on having a field day with all of the repurcussions of the players' actions- I plan on them slowly becoming famous for their exploits, and then VERY QUICKLY becoming infamous for the same reason.

And yes, one (or more) of the PCs names are going to wind up on the list. The entire idea for this campaign started, in fact, as an idea for an epic 3.5 adventure where the PCs of that campaign would wind up coming across the "Keepers of the List" many many years down the line, at which point one of them has gone completely psychotic and basically killed all of the others, herself planning on taking over the world to keep it from being destroyed (in her mind, at least). That campaign fizzled out, but the idea sparked a campaign in my head.

Once again, thanks for all of the input! I'm starting the campaign tonight, and I'm hoping all goes well.

My father told me this name, I think it was an actual person. Brood MacBile. My friend from the military liked the name Carados Shadowsiege.

I had a campaign plotline where the party has a system of portals that they would explore. Similar to the Matrix movies with the keys opening the back halls to random places. If your list has names from across the world you would need a mechanic to travel around from place to place, unless getting there is half the fun.

This sounds like a neat idea for a campaign. What if the pc's are duped in the end and find out that the BBEG created the list to kill those who could stop him from taking over the world.

Jasmine - a beautiful young girl born to some provincial merchant. in fact she is so beautiful that even some male gods fall for her, which may end up in a bloody and world-shattering feud.
Whiskers - a catfolk mystic who have found a way to cheat death (yeah, he's got 9 lives now, will be tough to scrap from The List)
Godslayer - an intelligent weapon with a self-explanatory name and very angry personality.
Orlanth - son of Storm god on his way to deityhood.
Howler - restless and hungry ghost of once powerful mage.
Vyrminthax - red dragon craving to become god.

and a random idea: make The List dynamic! in response to PC's actions new names would appear on it. maybe even PC's names if they start doing something very wrong. of course, some events could also make names vanish from it. so if PCs act smart they won't have to face moral dilemmas killing seemingly innocent people.
