Calling All Mad Scientists!

[Firefly Games]

Budding mad scientists, giant monster movie fans and gamers are invited to enter a contest so monstrous it could only be held by Firefly Games and RPGnet.

Just write up a UN Science Alert Corps dossier on your original monster for the world of Monster Island: The Game of Giant Monster Combat, a new game coming in July from Firefly Games.

The best creature feature will be included in the game as an inhabitant of Monster Island. The winner also receives an interior credit in the book and a free copy of the game. The best of the rest will be featured on the Firefly Games site as additional monsters for folks to use in their games.

You just create the name, description and background of the creature. We'll supply the writeup in game terms based on your submission. Original monsters only, please -- creatures that violate trademarks or copyrights are automatically ineligible.

The contest runs through April 22 on RPGnet. Go there for all the rules and to enter the contest!

Monster Island: The Game of Giant Monster Combat features rules for creating and fighting giant monsters imprisoned on a tropical island by the UN Science Alert Corps. The 32-page book includes a color cardstock insert of foldable monster figures and has a suggested retail price of $9.95. Written by Patrick Sweeney and Bruce Harlick, and illustrated by Bryce Nakagawa, the game will be released in July by Firefly Games.

I don't know if this is imortant,but perhaps you should be aware...

Adventures by Mail has a long running PBM game called "Monster Island". It isn't about Godzilla vs Rhodan, and the name probably isn't an issue, but you might want to double check, just in case...

Thanks for the heads-up! There are actually several Monster Islands out there -- including Marvel Comics (the former home of the Mole-Man), a comic book about an alien zoo of giant monsters, several recording studios, a record company and probably even more that I've never heard about. Since Monster Island: The Game of Giant Monster Combat is a published giant monster fighting game as opposed to a pbm fantasy roleplaying game, I don't expect there to be any confusion between the two.

In a practical sense, confusion is probably not an issue. I was more thinking of legal issues - in terms of copyright or trademarks. Similarity in name between a record company and a game is one thing. Similarity in name between two games is another.

Sure! First off, if you submit one for the contest and win, it'll be in the book. And if you don't win, then we'll put it on the Firefly Games website at www.firefly-games.com . Finally, Monster Island: The Game of Giant Monster Combat includes creature creation rules, so you can make up any monster you like once the game comes out in July.
