Campaign Calenders...

Paradoxish

First Post
Hey, everybody. My first post here. :D

A quick question for all of you GMs: when you're creating a homebrew campaign world do you usually use a real-world calender or do you go all out and create your own calender? And if you do create your own calender how far do you go? New days of the week? A full list of holidays? History to each holiday?

I'm just curious, because I usually end up going somewhere in between. I keep seven day weeks with familiar days, but usually end up making new months for flavor. Just so things don't get too confusing for players I keep 12 months and don't mind if my players refer to the months by their real-world names since I keep the same number of days per month (ie, the first month of the year still has 31 days).

What about the rest of you?

Welcome to the boards.

I have my own calender with names for days, months, and even weeks. I have some holidays for the more defined religions and countries, but there is always room for more. I have some ceelstrail events tied to the calendar like the moon phases and eclipses.

It depends on the setting. A world with 5 day weeks and 15 month years can be fun if the PC put in enough effort to learn it. Or they can ignore it.

I've always considered the number of Months or days in a year to be trivial compared to the number of hours in a day. 12 hour days are strange for wilderness adventures...

calanders

I basically use the scarred lands, they have their own calander (at least they give you the names of the days, weeks and months
I havn't seen a published calander though. I had one of my players come up with one (used bonus xp as incentive) and it has really helped us keep better track of the time passing. weither you go with a setting or homebrew I highly recomed that as the DM you use one.

I use to go to this level of detail, but my current group is so casual - they could care less. So, to keep it simple I just use the real word naming convention. Heh. I do do seperate holidays for religions though.

I use it now. Actually having a twelve (or other number of months neatly divisible to 4) month calender really helps with tracking the seasons. I do name my own months, and often I get rid of the concept of weeks altogether.

I've kept it simple, and just use twelve 30-day months, with the same names as our months. I once did a long campaign, with seven days of the week using new unique names, but the players just got confused by that. Personally, I'd rather they focus on the more important details of the module instead.

Silver moon, that's my attitude as well. Although the idea of twelve thirty-day months and no concepts of weeks is a good idea as well. I may do something like that in the new campaign I'll be starting on Saturday. It'll allow me to customize things a bit without confusing my players too much. ;)

Welcome to EN World Paradoxish. Love the name too. Personally, my favorite paradox is the saying "All general statements are false".

I just use a real world callendar, with major holidays falling on all the saem days, although with different names. It's easier for the PC's to keep track of, and I tell them to assume that their characters hear it as a different date more appropriate to the game.
