It was a collection of articles that presented bits and peices from old campaigns as well as current ones, and topped it off with a preview of Eberron. Basically it was an overview of the many different settings (A)D&D had encompassed over the years, with the notable exception of Spelljammer. WRT to your examples, the Birthright areticle presented blood abilities as a special type of feats, while Mystara had three articles; the main Mystara article had an overview of Cynidicea, the Hollow World article had a template and related feats for an evil cult that sacrifices dinosaurs, and the Red Steel article presented 3.5 rules for the Red Curse and statistics for tortles.
And what is the current plan? To provide useable campaign settings? Or just more short summaries (maybe with 3e notes for people with the original material)?
In short, is this really something that exciting for a real campaign? Or just a nifty nostalgia read on the train?
Well, the articles on the generic settings weren't all that interesting IMO; Greyhawk was given a bunch of regional feats, the Realms got a PrC that was a follower of Eilistraee (and that was my least favorite article, good drow make me sick), and Mystara had an overview of a setting from an old module. The cooler stuff was from the more unique settings; the bloodline feats for Birthright, sha'irs for al-Qadim, the Red Curse for Red Steel/Savage Coast, and jaguar and pluma knight PrCs for Maztica. It was more useful for the unusual settings as it gave a base for a 3.5 conversion IMO. A lot of it was nostalgia, but it was a great issue.
Also, most of the articles mentioned a brief history on the development of many of the various campaign worlds.
