D&D 5E Can a PC take a Long/Short rest while using Meld with Stone?

Meld with Stone is a non-concentration 3rd level ritual spell that lasts 8 hours and allows the caster to be aware of time and even cast spells on themselves while melded. It would seem that it would allow the use of a long or short rest while melded, based on their definitions. Would you allow that as a DM?

Think that is the point of the spell and the duration being 8 hours in the first place.
