What's wrong with that sentence? I kinda like it--it's colorful, and it uses a nice economy of words to convey a lot.
Of course, it's all about context too--too many sentences like that start to seem really artificial and forced, but every so often; I could go for that.
The whole purpose of Thog's Master Class is to take those types of sentences out of context and show the humor in them. Many of the examples from the column have been taken from material by very respected authors. I personally enjoy Ranger Wickett's interpretation in this instance.
