Can anybody post the afterword of the 1st ed DMG?

To me, the integrity of the game comes second to the people involved, because when all is said and done, it is still JUST a game. People are living and breathing realities that we must deal with.

That said, catering to every little player whim, including having a player that repeatedly ditches a commitment, is abhorrent to me. An emergency is one thing; breaking your word consistently is quite another. I will not sacrifice my enjoyment nor the enjoyment of others just to some loser who says they will show up and then reneges.

So the game (overall as a whole) does come before the players then. :D
 


You don't think it means order things in your game first (the rules) then your campaign (setting), then tell PCs what they can and can't do.

I think that makes sense, that way what you tell your PCs they can and can not do makes sense in the context of the game and campaign.
