Can Clerics Forego Spell Preparation Like Wizards?

Heres a quick question because it is very important to me in the campaign i am in right now. My cleric just advanced to 17th lvl, and got some extra spell slots. I will not be able to rest to gain the spells. BUT, they are unused. Can i use them up after 15 minutes of rest?Or do i have to wait till my next rest period to activate them?

I would say you don't actually have the spell slots available until you have prayed for them.

I agree with Caliban.

For the record, you said you not be able to rest to gain the spells, but that has nothing to do with it. The PHB specifically says on page 156 under "Time of Day" rules, that clerics do not need to rest first to get back their spells, unlike Wizards.

But as Caliban mentioned you still need to pray at your deities next designated prayer time. The good news is that you don't need the full hour of prayer, just a fraction of that to fill the empty slots, but always at least 15 minutes.

This not needing to rest before spell acquisition strikes me as yet another cleric perk. I guess the rationale is that a Wizard's mind must be totally rested in order to study their books, whereas even a tired cleric can still pray.

P.S. Your cleric is 17th level?? Nice. Man, you get 9th level spells now! Yikes. Being a mere 5th, I am so jealous.

On leveling up:

If you level up in the middle of a day during an adventure (I wouldn't handle it that way, but that's just me) any new spells are NOT gained until you've prayed the next time. (You haven't yet received the divine power associated with those new slots - they are not "unfilled" from your last prayer time). At that time you prepare for 1 hour and have your spells, or keep some for 15-minute preparation later in the day.

I hope that's cleared that up

well, the only thing about the faq, etc. is that it destroys this preconceived notion that a cleric's deity grants spells. dms can no longer use the "your god refuses to grant you that spell" excuse.

I think you can still do that if you want. It still requires them to pray for the spell they want to prepare, even if they do it outside of their required "prayer power hour" each day.

Agreed. No reason why the deity, or agents thereof, cannot interfere (for good or ill) with the spell preparation process.
