Can good characters let evil characters die?

If this situation arose, and we were within a short distance of the town, we would stablize them, tie them up REALLY nice, and hand em over to the authorities (who might just outright execute them right then are there anyways). If we knew that we were a long ways from town, then we would just let them die of their wounds, not even bothering to heal them. Letting them succumb of their injuries which occured because THEY picked a fight is far from evil, and probably the most merciful of all options.

Hey good point, Tom. :)

Well, based on the standard D&D alignment rules, I would strip all the NPCs of any gear they have that is worth keeping and especially weapons and armor and then send them packing. You have left them with their lives but also dealt them a potentially dangerous and deadly punishment by forcing them to run out of the dungeon and wilderness unarmed and unarmored. And since they ambushed the party with the intent of killing them, that seems more than fair to me.
