Can Someone Else Please Buy Some Adverts!

This thread seems a little ironic cause I currently have eight threads open in EnWorld [yay for tabs] and NONE of them have any ads in them excluding the Google ads on the bottom.

The problem I noticed when I did the ad was that I burned through those ads and had less than 1% click-through rate.

That may feel low, but my understanding (I work in advertising) is that it's not unusual. For our clients (not gaming companies :) ), we note that the industry standard for click-through rate is something like 0.2% - 0.3%. Certainly there are ads that do better than that, and I don't know if EN World's average click-through is similar to what I've seen, but under 1% doesn't strike me as "off".

Out of interest is Game Night available from Amazon only?

No. The distributor (Lightning Source) have registered it with the various world-wide databases that everyone uses, which means that it should be available on all on-line sellers (such as Amazon) as well as being available for order through bookshops.

The only reason I mention Amazon is that:

a) it's the biggest and most well-known on-line seller, so tell people it's on Amazon and you instantly let them know that it's proper book, properly available (and given that the potential customers I'm meeting are on-line, it makes sense to direct them to an on-line seller);

b) the Amazon affiliate scheme means that not only can I have really nice looking one-click displays on my website, I get (full disclosure) to keep a share of Amazon's profits too (I'm not doing this to make a profit - I wouldn't be buying this much advertising if I was - but it doesn't make sense to turn potential money away).

Regarding advertising. I understand ENWorld is currently having a 2 for 1 offer on impressions, which sounds a jolly good deal.

It is a very good deal. In fact, I've just gone back and purchased a second batch.

That's because I was, literally, the only advertiser, and so when I took my ads down yesterday morning to conserve my impressions that left none on. I'll probably put an ad back up this afternoon for a day or so.

Yeah, that seems pretty reasonable to me to. My ads reached highs of 0.38% and ended up as something like 0.1%. That's a bit lower than I'd like, but I think maybe that's because they were being shown a bit too often.

I figure that if 35,000 different people visit the site each day, you want to hit each one of them about 3 times a day, every day, for several days. Which would mean using about 100,000 impressions a day. By contrast I managed to burn through 350,000 impressions in about 18 hours.

I don't think there's much advantage to be gained by hitting someone 10-15 times in one session (say) because if they're not going to click on it this session, they're not going to click on it, and after the first three or four times they've probably noticed it. Better to come back tomorrow and hit them again.

So I'm hoping that if (when?) there are more advertisers, perhaps enough so that I'm doing more like 100,000 a day, my click through rates will go up to more like 0.3 to 0.5%. But I wouldn't expect any more than that, given that I doubt that I personally click on more than 1 in 300 of the adverts I see (and I might not even do that).

In the meantime, I'll just run every few days or so, for half a day or so, and at least get some blanket coverage.

Software limitations. EN World II will be much more powerful on the ad flexibility side.

Sounds good. Will you be able to pause ads, rather than delete/recreate them? That would be really cool.

Having said that, it's already pretty good already. With other sites, you have to send an email to someone with an attached graphic file to start your ad, and then another email if you want it taken down. It's much nicer have a control panel where you can just do it all yourself, and see real-time results. I wouldn't want anyone to take this thread as any criticism of ENWorld. It's slightly unfortunate that I'm the only advertiser on here right now, but I still feel I'm getting a really good service from a very worthwhile site.

Another sell. I was convinced when the player that was off in mind Oz didn't realize the idiot player had taken back his stupid action back.
Twice.
You must know most of the people I've gamed with.

Well I tried to tap into some universal constants of gaming, classic gamer archetypes and so on. From people's reactions, I'm cautiously optimistic that I succeeded.

And thanks for buying the book! :)
