Can someone recommend a good sci-fi or modern based RPG?

I'd say d20 Modern, but you say you've already seen it. In my book, that's all I need, but obviously you want something else. Since you haven't told us what, I find it hard to make any other type of recommendation.

GURPS Traveller has tons of support at all the FLGS in my area while all I've seen from T20 is the core book. You can probably get the GURPS Traveller anniversary pack with the main book, the aliens guide, a ship guide and the DM's screen for 29.95. Not a bad deal at all. Of course I'm sure you could use most Traveller supliments with T20 with a minimum of work.

I put in another vote for Shadowrun.

I love this game, and the world. The rules can be really complex and hard to learn, but once you get into it, it's a lot of fun. Shadowrun is a cyber-punk type world, with a mix of fantasy and magic tossed in as well. The nice thing about Shadowrun is that if you WANT to, you can completely ignore the fantasy aspects of the game, because all the other aspects are really really cool.

I'd also recommend GURPS and some of its sci-fi offshoots. Lots of fun there too.

I've also played Mechwarrior for years and years and years. If you've ever played Battletech, try checking out Mechwarrior 3rd Edition. Great sci-fi RPG.

No Shadowrun, no cyber-punk. No mixing genres. I am looking for a pure sci-fi game, or a pure modern game.

I am looking for something like Traveller, Alternity, or Gamma World for my sci-fi game

I am looking for something like Top Secret, Spycraft, or d20 modern for my modern campaign.

My gaming group might pick one of the games I just mentioned, or we might pick some other one. I depends on what I can find, and what kind of recommendations I can get from the internet community.

Well, I'll add another Spycraft reccommendation (gee, wonder why).

I can tell you right now that the game isn't going anywhere. The fanbase is strong enough and the game is solid enough. Besides, if your mentality is "oh, everyone else is buying d20 Modern so I'd better not buy Spycraft" then you will miss out on a great game. Don't getta me wrongo, I love d20 Modern too. But they're for two different types of games. Besides, Spycraft has ten times more first-party support and a couple of third-party supporters too, so it's going to have plenty of product.

Also, I've heard some rumblings from some of the d20 publishers that they're "waiting to see" about d20 Modern before supporting it. Wuthout key first party support, I'm not certain d20 Modern is a more reliable line than Spycraft.

Still, one could argue that Spycraft can work wonders if it is allowed third-party support. And open Spycraft system would bring a lot of publishers making different espionage campaig settings, add-on supplements, etc.

I like Traveller. GURPS Traveller is very well supported.

Um, GURPS Blue Planet will be out soon. GURPS Transhuman Space is pretty good.

I like GURPS for sci-fi. It hurts like a beyotch when you get hit by a blaster in GURPS. PCs best respect the GM...or else!
