I was thinking more along the lines of a (wooden?) construct sort of appearance. And possibly his following contributed to the creation of the Warforged. (In Eberron, of course.) And possibly the reason no one knows how to make new forges anymore is that Oppidan disapproved of some of the purposes they were put to, and no longer allows some of the prayers necessary?
