Yeah -- given the rivalry between cities, why would they ever share a patron deity? Athena vs. Ares makes for good poetry, man. Just give one deity to each city (or vice versa).

He's (She's?) absolutely right, now that I think about it - each city SHOULD have its own patron deity!

But short of that, I like Burghal or Oppidan.

I asked my wife initially - she's not a regular gamer, so she lacked context for the question, but she has a good amount of knowledge of gods and goddesses. She suggested Athena - a goddess of the hunt...

I said "a", not "the".

I added that from faulty memory - I was thinking Athena=Diana (wrong, of course, Artemis=Diana, Athena=Minerva. Merciful Minerva! ) and of the story of the guy that got punished for watching Diana bathe after She was all hot and sweaty from a day spent hunting.

Athena was, though, the founder of a city, a goddess of war, and associated with olive trees - still not a bad choice for an urban ranger.

I was thinking more along the lines of a (wooden?) construct sort of appearance. And possibly his following contributed to the creation of the Warforged. (In Eberron, of course.) And possibly the reason no one knows how to make new forges anymore is that Oppidan disapproved of some of the purposes they were put to, and no longer allows some of the prayers necessary? (Except maybe to the Lord of Blades, who is a loyal adherent to Oppidan?)

I like it, anyway.
