Can you enhance a golem?

Anyone have any idea on how you could give a golem an intelligence score? I really like the idea of my gnome being a creator of sentient beings.[/COLOR]
If you want to create a sentient construct, you'll probably need epic magic. The ELH has an example spell called Origin of Species: Achierai, which generates a sentient creature from nothing. Create your own, similar epic spell to generate a different kind of creature.

IMO you can't imbue sentience into an existing golem. Even if there were a variant of Awaken that could target constructs, the golem's magic immunity would prevent that spell from working.

You're gonna need one hell of a Leadership score. ;)

Tell me about it. I told my DM my character and his love interest were going to conceive a child but my DM said my Leadership score was only high enough for a mild rash. :D

Encyclopedia Magica: Constructs.

It offers stuff on Sumulcari, Mechanism constructs, and Golems.

Offers lots of cool info. Check it out. As well, it offers material on creating golems from other materials (Gold, Silver, Shell, Bone, Onyx, etc).

If you want to make a stronger golem, just build it with more hit dice (it costs proportionately more, but it may be worth it).
I don't recall seeing this in the core rules. Is it from another publisher, or a house rule?

I could have swarn I saw a epic spell seed that increased an objects hardness or something like that.

Golems don't have hardness. Animated Objects do. Golems have DR. I don't see why you couldn't create a custom spell that increased the golems DR, or perhaps gave it the fast healing ability like a Retriever has. Perhaps a custom version of Monstrous Regeneration (MaoF), but for constructs would be appropriate.

Well, Golems in the MM do have a listed advancement, so there must be a way to create bigger one. His advice seems sound enough.

In regards to having a Golem, I really don't think they are an exception from requiring the Leadership score. The only difference between having a Golem as a cohort or a Mind Flayer as a cohort is that the Golem is 100% loyal to you, will do anything you ask, no matter what, and will never question your commands, ever. This has nothing to do with the lack of an Intelligence score either. The XP expenditure is what makes a golem so loyal, and what truly makes it yours, and yours alone. I don't think the XP expenditure is meant to allow you to substitute equipment, wealth, and magic items for a horde of golems.

However, in regards to their loyalty, keep a close eye on those damn Clay Golems when you first build them! :)
