D&D 5E Can you hear the audible version of the Alarm spell if you are more than 60 feet away?

I'd say, within 60 feet you can hear the alarm clearly, its volume is as loud at one end as the other. Beyond that, the sound starts dropping off, you might still hear it 120 feet away but not quite know what that sound is or where it is coming from, kind of like "did somebody hear something?"

Just to add to the discussion this is the "audible" part of the spell in the 3.5 rules:

Audible Alarm

An audible alarm produces the sound of a hand bell, and anyone within 60 feet of the warded area can hear it clearly. Reduce the distance by 10 feet for each interposing closed door and by 20 feet for each substantial interposing wall.

In quiet conditions, the ringing can be heard faintly as far as 180 feet away. The sound lasts for 1 round. Creatures within a silence spell cannot hear the ringing.

This seems to speak more for the can only be heard within the radius crowd but this version has a special mention of the sound traveling outside the area too.

The spell only does what it says and doesn't do what it doesn't say, so the sound is not audible outside of 60 feet because the spell doesn't produce a sound outside of 60 feet.

From this, it might be surmised that it's a "quiet" noise which, in my games, has a maximum range of 60 feet (2d6 x 5).

Alarm would be pretty useless if it alerted the whole dungeon...

It could get really annoying in a mega dungeon…or just the Underdark…with (presumably) dozens of other adventuring parties scattered throughout. Constantly tinkling, probably with a Pavlovian reaction.

I would likely go with this as well. The spell says you hear the noise in 60 ft, then you hear it in 60ft. At 61ft there is no sound from this spell. There must be something in the magic that stops the sound vibrations from traveling farther than the 60ft.

Or, as I suggested, the sound is quiet enough that it's inaudible outside of 60'. Or the magic places the sound directly into the minds of creatures within 60', etc.

If you leave it open to something, people will argue that certain animals like dogs can hear things inaudible to humans, so they should hear it, and this monster, and this PC race, and, and, and...

I could see the magic just placing the sound into the minds of anything in the 60ft.
