Can you save feat selections?

Wow, I'm just a question-asking annoyance lately...

... so, can you hold off selecting a feat until you have the pre-req for it?

3.5? No idea. In 3.0 it was the DMs call... you could take the feat but couldn't use it... at least that was a Sage advice, IIRC the rules said you need to meet all prerequisites to take a feat.

No, you cannot wait.

The FAQ, and sage advice, says that if "one of your players just can?t decide right away, it?s okay to let the player wait awhile, but the character must spend the points or choose the feat before the character in question gains another level."

No. You can house rule it otherwise, but by the book you have to choose it when you level.

If within a game session, or two at the most, I will let a player change their Feat selection once. Sometimes you just can't gauge how useful some will be, and some tend to be useless a lot of the time.

But that's different. I let people do that too, especially newbies.

But there's no way I'm letting the rogue wait till 2nd level to take a first level feat, because he want's weapon finesse before 3rd level...

And yeah, your right, I'd never let someone "save" a Feat til later.

For the record, it was to save feats to use on item creation stuff, but it has to be core 3.5, no house rules.

Some of the writers said something, and I'm not sure where at all, about weapon finesse 'should not have a base attack bonus prerequisite'

Andy did on his boards a while back.

He said that, now that he had second thoughts about it, it was wrong to deny the dex-raisers their fighting style until 3rd level.

I'd probably allow it, remove the BAB prereq.

But otherwise, feats are meant to be taken after you meet the prereqs, no saving.
