D&D General Would You Play High Level (12-15);Wiith Pre Generated Characters? Mostly 5.0/5.5 but theoretically any edition.

I wouldn't object to pregens per se, but I'd like to know why the DM isn't letting us make our own characters. Is it to tailor the characters to the setting and storyline? Cool. Is it because the DM doesn't trust the players to make characters correctly or not to make them OP? Less cool (but possibly still understandable depending on who's in the group).

I would also say no, if I'm starting a campaign with a high level character it pretty much needs to be my own creation. I would be okay with a pitch that included broad outlines of who are characters are, where we are and how we got there as long as we work together to fill in the details.

I might be okay if the group split up the members of BG3 and we built our version of that PC. Even then I'd probably want to be a rebel and just do the custom character.

I think the key here is a background generating session 0. Have the players focus on pure background discussion, breathe life into the characters. Sure the DM has given out the stats, but how they got their for the players to decide. Have them decide if they know each other before hand and work out relationships....and probably allow some minor tweaking to fit certain background elements (like a skill prof or something).

I think you can get players invested in a pregen if you challenge them to do so. If its like "tell me how this guy came to be" and let them craft the story, then they can get interested.

Its not for everyone, but if your going for it that's how I'd do it.

Inexperienced players (first campaign for most), new edition, wanting to keep things simple.

Also a spin off from why there's a lack of high level games. Complexity is a big one for me. I can run high level buy don't generally want to.

If players want high level D&D their choices are a different edition, find a new DM, DM themselves or play new lower level campaign.

I dont think passing out high level pregens is a good idea for folks who have never played in a campaign before. Nor will it be simple doing the work for them.

You've no responsibility to run high games if you dont want to.

Thats an odd statement considering you want to run a high level 5E game.

They are currently level 9. Campaign is planned for 11 or 12. Most have played BG3.

It's probably BG 4 using okder material for avenue and Gith city astral plane.

I haven't done high level for years. By that I mean level 15.

So, they are not inexperienced and have done a campaign? Just not played high level?

I think you'll be fine 5E high level is pretty simple compared to what came just before it.

DM pitches a game. Level 12-15 but they're using pregenerated characters. DM has a clue and has equipped them reasonably well ...

For the most part you're free to play them however you like. There's no rail loaded backstory beyond pre selected back grounds/origins. There may be a campaign story so far if you're parachuting into a higher level AP but it's up to you how your selected character plays.
Sure. If it's a campaign I'm going to want to adjust things as I level up, and I have some specific class preferences, but I'm game. This assumes, however, that I know this person and have gamed with them in the past. If I trust them, sure. If I need to play a couple sessions with a PC I don't care for to learn the vibe of the game and table, and can restart with a DM-made character more to my liking once I get the vibe, sure.

I've done it before. It's gone well sometimes, poorly sometimes. I would be curious as to why, but if the answer is along the lines of "these specific people are the heart of the campaign, and they need to be there", okay sure.

I'm pretty mellow if I can play a wizard, artificer, fixer, &c.
