Can't log in

I know the crash messed things up but I can't log in under my old username, Particle_Man. I can't even ask for a new password because my email address changed since the time the crash reset us to.

Ok, I made a new username, Particle_Man6. But there is a problem. I was able to make a comment, but then after a virus check and cookie-deletion, I found I could not log in again because it would not accept my password.

Fair enough, I ask for a new password to be emailed to me. But even when I cut and paste that new password in, in order to log in, the system still does not recognize the password.

So what do I do? It seems like the only way I can post is to do so under a new username every time. So far, I have been Particle_Man, Particle_Man6, and Particle_Man2. There must be some way to do this other than being the Particle_Man dynasty.

That's a bad, bad solution! Funny, but bad. Just so you know as we figure this out, you don't need a user name to post in Meta.

What do you see when it rejects you - a white screen, or a "wrong password" screen?

Unregistered doesn't work for me

Sadly, when I tried to enter something here on this thread without registering, it said that "Unregistered" is a name already in use, and that if I am "Unregistered", I need to enter a password. That is why I am under this username this time. I am not trying to be cute, here.

Anyhow, to answer your question, I don't get the white screen, I get the "password incorrect, you have 5 tries", etc. screen, when I try to log in.

Okay, kicking this to our more technically minded mods.

When you attempt to post without logging in it gives you a default username of 'unregistered', and then disallows that because that is a valid username.

A quick search on the mod panel shows that there is infact someone who registered with the username "unregistered" - back in Oct 2002 and it hasn't been used since Nov 2002. That would be why the "That username is already in use. If you are Unregistered and you have forgotten your password, click here." message cropped up.

in order to post in Meta just change the 'username' from the default 'unregistered' to something else which isn't a valid username (I've made a post under the name 'not particle man' for instance)

Regarding logging in as particle man, the best thing would be if an Admin could change your Particle Man email address for your current email (presumably the particle man6 email address?). As a moderator I can see your email address but I don't think I can change it. Once it has been changed, you should then be able to recover your password OK, hopefully!

I'm not a technically-minded mod, but...

What browser do you use? I had a similar problem once, using Firefox (although it was on a different board with a somewhat different software).

By the way, do any of your user names now share the same e-mail address? I vaguely remember that, once upon a time, I read that this could cause problems when having the system e-mail you a new password. I don't remember what kind of problems, however.

PM, I've changed the email address on your main account to what I believe is your current one (telus.net). You should be able to retrieve the password, at least! If not, I can change the password for you.
