Can't post.

Rules Monkey
I haven't been able to post on the Rules forum for the last day or so. I couldn't even access it until I used the http://66.216.60.169 address.

Now when I try to reply to a post it tells me that I have to log in. I log in, and then it tells me that there is no parent thread.

I'm not even sure if I will be able to post this.

It doesn't seem to be reading the session cookies, and I have made sure that they are enabled in my profile, and in my browser (IE 6). I've experienced this issue on two different computers.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

OK, it's working now.

It seems that I had to make a post that starts a new thread, instead of a post that is a reply to an existing thread, before it would recognize me.

Strange.

I'm guessing here that you're one of the hundreds of people who appear to have read half of the news item giving the details of the alt. IP address and then inexplicably just stopped reading after the first sentence.

Sorry, I can't be of any more help than I have been, right now. I've been trying to contact Adlon and fizz at cyberstreet for the last three days, and neither are replying to my emails.

You mean this part:
If they want to log in or post they will either need to wait until the issue is resolved, wait for whomever who wrote the cookie-checkers for your forums to fix their code, or put that IP in their hosts file."
?

I read that, but it didn't help me.

Well, if you read my post above, it appears that there is a way around it, because I can log in and post normally now.

Yeah, but I thought it made it pretty obvious there was no point asking me what's causing it. I'm not gonna say "Yeah, I know exactly how to fix it, but I' only telling the people who ask me directly!" :)

How odd. It'll be interesting to see if that works for other people too. Perhaps it's that old cookie thingumajigger, and with a new IP the boards need new cookies? Or something. I'm getting in over my head here.

I wasn't asking you specifically. I was mainly testing to see if I could post on a different board, and to see if anyone had run into the same issue and had any ideas on a workaround.

Hopefully this will work for anyone else who is having the same issue.

This means you are clearly qualified for a management position in the IT industry, and should send your resume post-haste to the nearest headhunter I MEAN executive recruitment agency.

Sorry I wasn't very clear in my e-mail, but things seem to be working now for me anyway.

I'm not sure what exactly happened, but some DNS servers apparently ended up pointing to the wrong address, which could not be reached because a router along the line didn't know what machine to send it to.

If people are still having problems, and they REALLY want to post normally or whatever, they can edit their 'hosts' file, though I do not recommend it.

It can be found in
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Under windows NT and 2000, probably XP too. Windows 95/98 have a similar file, but I forget the exact directory.

It should list examples, such as

127.0.0.1 localhost
Which points 'localhost' to your own machine.

If you add the following line
66.216.60.169 test.cyberstreet.com

or, with the 'new' link'
66.216.60.169 test2.cyberstreet.com

You can access the boards normally. -HOWEVER- if you leave these addresses in there when the server gets changed, the ip will be changed and you will no longer be able to access the forums through test.cyberstreet.com or test2.cyberstreet.com until you remove those lines.

A more useful thing to do with the hosts file is to point ad networks (such as doubleclick.net) to 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0

I am able to post when I go to test.cyberstreet.com, but not when I go to test2.cyberstreet.com

I'm not sure if that problem is on my end or if it is the way the cookies are set up.

i'm really confused, and I know networking in and out.

Originally, I could not connect for over a day to test.cyberstreet boards.
Then I read the front page, it directed me to the 66. address boards.

I can read fine, but I can't post, exactly as Caliban described.

This still happens as of this morning.

So I went back to these boards, and I can post, but it seems like they are different boards, with different threads.

I'll double-check that.
