Carapace Armor

Closest I can find or think of is Bone Armor in Arms & Equipment Guide and Oriental Adventures (light armor), Shell Armor in A&EG (medium), Coral Armor in A&EG (heavy), and Chitin (weapon/shield/heavy armor material in A&EG, no real advantage except it's half the weight of steel).

I remember some sort of Turtle Shell armor that kind of worked like a Tower Shield (ie it gave you cover) but I can't say where I saw this or if I imagined it...

Altamont: There was a Great Shell Shield in E.N.Armoury: Shields. Could be that's what you're thinking of.

As far as carapace armor goes, you could just use the same stats as Hide armor, or maybe take Hide armor and increase the AC and Armor Check Penalties by 1 each and the weight by 5 lbs.

Did WotC or Dragon Mag release stats for Carapace Armor

What type of carapace? Cockroach, mudbug, prawn? I imagine it would vary according to the creature it was derived from in any case.

That would take a whole lot of cockroaches...

Who would shell them? Is there a profession for Shelling Cockroaches, or is that folded into Craft (Armorsmith)? Could you shell a cockroach, cast Cure Light Wounds to heal it, and then shell it again? How long does a cockroach live after it's shelled? Would enemies of a Cockroach Carapice Armored individual have to make Will Saves against the Willies?

Actually, I think there was a sort of cockroach armor in one of the Dragon Annuals. If I remember correctly, it was an article of about five different, very weird types of armor, one of them being a "suit" of living bugs. There was also some sort of psionic-power armor, and wood armor, and starfish/barnacle armor (I think). In any case, it was a really cool article - the author was really "thinking outside the box."

Races of Faerun has chitin armor. It is crafted from the shells of monstrous vermin and similarly-shelled creatures (especially giant aquatic arthropods)
