Carnivale 11-23 *SPOILERS*

I also think the idea with the snake was Lodz'. The website write-up on hbo.com also makes it sound that way.

I do think that Ruthie will come back- she seemed to be a pretty strongly-written character. How this would effect Apollonia is hard to say. Though in that first scene with her and Sophie (the haircut, after Sophie's talk with Libby), I half expected Sophie to shove the pillow on her mother's face. You could tell the thought was going through her mind.

I hadn't thought about Scudder trying to protect Ben- everyone else certianly points to him being a villain. But I suppose that might not stop him from helping someone to hurt Lodz and Mangement- they may have contributed to his downfall. The confessional scene definately took me by surprise.

Speaking of which, I don't think Ben's fling with Ruthie would have hampered his power any. In confession, he admitted to plenty of other sins before that- including the murder that sent him to the chain gang. So I think either there wasn't enough life around for it to work, or there was something special about the snake- Lodz certainly had to go through some hoops in order to get it.

So far, I don't think there's going to be a whole lot in the way of higher moralization in the story- no actual judgement from God or anything like that. It's human beings that are making these decisions, even if they attribute it to God that's really just their interpretation of things.

It's humans who have these powers, even if they are supernatural in nature- the meaning comes from how they use them. Other stuff- secret societies, special baptismal rites, etc- could all just be means of channelling the power. The way things are lining up, Ben seems to be standing for a simple faith, while everyone else who's involved in the supernatural seems to be wrapped in supersition and ritual mysticism, but almost always as a means of control.

I agree completely. If they do in fact go the way of higher moralization then it will certainly spoil the show for me.
