Carnivale

Looked back but I couldn't find the thread on this. Anyone watching it?

Man, last episode (11/18/03) was the best yet. Finally things are starting to come into focus. My biggest curiousity so far is who the management is. Samson refers to him as a man looking for Scutter, and bought the parent company of the carnival. Any thoughts on who it is, and what is the connection with the man with the tree tattoo?

Great series that seems to be getting better

Awesome series. I agree- the last episode was the best yet. Especially the "baptism" scene.

I'm almost certain that the man with the tree tattoos is Scutter. Though, now that I re-read your post, I don't see anything to indicate otherwise. Ah well. At any rate, whomever acquired the carnival seemed to do so specifically because they felt it helped their quest to find Scutter- if, indeed, he's even still around, and not just wandering around in dreams.

Since I've only seen each episode once, it's hard to go back and put things together. But remember in the first episode, where Samson was talking about the war between light and dark getting played out in every generation? My guess is that, in the last showdown (possibly during the Great War), something went wrong, and things weren't fully resolved. If that's the case, Management could be the opposite side ("good", for what that's worth- he was willing to sacrifice a girl to the ghosts in Babylon simply so Ben could have the experience in the mines) looking for Scutter to finish things off- meanwhile, events have moved on without them, and Ben and Justin will be getting caught up in both the past and present showdowns.

All this is speculation, mind you. I could be totally wrong. For a while I thought the snake lady (can't remember her name) might be Ben's real mother, but the last episode proved me wrong on that. At least, I really hope it did. :p

I like all the stuff with the templars and occult history. It's something I wasn't expecting; there's a lot of backstory to go through, but they're mixing it in with current events enough to keep both plot threads interesting.

Incidentally, I've been told that the second season has been approved, which is why there doesn't seem to be any resolution immediately on the horizon. I like the show enough that I'm not irritated by the slowdown- things would have seemed rushed otherwise. It's odd that shows like this and 24, which want to only have one tightly-scripted season, constantly get renewed. Most other shows what to go on forever and get cancelled quickly. Makes me think the public actually does want something original, after all....

Also: I love the character of Samson, and I think that it's great that Michael Anderson got this role. He's a great actor, but of course always gets relegated to sterotypical Hollywood roles due to physical stature. Now he's really got a chance to shine, and he's definately earned it.

Speculation is what makes this series so great for me. Things are unravelling slowly and constantly generating more questions. Thats what keeps people comeing back week after week (you just can't miss an episode!). I can't remember the last time I felt this way about a series :D

I too hope that Ruthie is not Ben's mother (or this goes one worse than Leia kissing Luke by a long shot  ).

Count me in as a huge fan of the series. Here's hoping that HBO let's it run until the story is finished (which I've heard the creator has said could take up to 6 seasons).

Every week I come up with new theories and speculations and every week something in the newest episode throws them out of whack. I love it!

I am definitely a fan of the show, and love what's going on so far! I'm definitely rooting for a Samson/Sophie/Ben/Jonesy alliance against Lodz. It just makes so much sense.

Michael Anderson is by far and away the star of this show. "They're a secret fraternal brotherhood... let me do the talkin'." :D It's just a great role with a great actor in it.

The one thing I don't particularly care for at the moment is the treatment of Justin's storyline. I like it a lot, and it seemed in the beginning we'd see about equal amounts of him and Ben. However, it just seems to me that so little time is being spent on his storyline, and I really like it. I definitely like Evil Iris too. :) The only benefit is that Justin's story seems to move right along - almost every scene with him is something big... not so much with Ben and company though.

I am a fan of Carnivale too and I believe that every episode is better than the preceeding one. The supporting characters are just as mysterious as the main characters. I find myself enjoying all aspects of the show from the strange dreams to the love affairs. It is the only show on tv that makes me go "tonight's episode is over already...that went by fast."

It's an odd sort of plotting- as it becomes more and more apparent that Justin's the bad guy, less time is spent on him. I'm guessing that's because he's getting things together much quicker than Ben is. And, of course, shows will always focus on the good guys. I do like then new dimension in Sister Iris- she had seemed sort of flat before, but I guess she was just biding her time. >:)

I can already see a power struggle brewing between her and Justin. Now that little brother's got his powers and everything in line, I don't think he's going to be listening to sis nearly as much as he used to. The flashbacks with their childhood was good- my guess is that their family was either tied to the Templars or being hunted by them. And considering they look to be close to forty or so, that puts the beginnings of this way before the Great War or Ben's birth or any of that. Nice to see the way things are interweaving.

I'm guessing they've got some sort of connection to Bachau's character- I'm pretty sure he was Russian, and one of the dream sequences showed him as a younger entertainer in the Great War. And, now that I think about it, the uniforms in that scene did look Russian, although I'm no expert or anything.

The soldier that was stalking Scudder and got mauled by Lodz's bear in the WW1 dreams is referred to as "the Russian soldier" in the episode recaps on HBO's website. Now that we know Justin and Iris are Russian too, it just makes it that much more interesting...

See, I kind of got the impression that was supposed to be Management, since we now know that's his goal too. Either interpreting it that way or the soldier as Justin still paints Lodz out to be a good guy, despite being creepy and amoral.

I'm leaning heavily to the theory that Management = The Russian Soldier as well. We're supposed to find out for sure by the end of the season.
