I meant Stockton, California. Sorry about that. Unless I'm mistaken, California is the biggest agricultural center in the US.

EDIT: If you drive the I-5 freeway up California you will pass by some of the most horrendous cattle farms imaginable. Muddy, feces filled, meat grinder factories. It smells like butter.

But isn't hicks usually connected to the southern mid-west ?

When I think of the Southwest, which includes New Mexico (where Albequerque is), I think of good food, great art, some new age influences, and heavy Mexican cultural influence.

The mid-west, which might be what you're thinking of, is north and east of there and includes places like Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, Wisconsin, and thereabouts. Any city that you've heard of overseas though is probably pretty urban. The movie "Boys Don't Cry," if you've seen it, takes place in a small town in Nebraska.
