Carrying weapons

Noldor Elf

First Post
How your characters carry weapons, when they are in town or city? Swords are easily put in scabbard and hanging from your belt, but how about longbow or battleaxe?

How character with big weapon can show he is not hostile, while in civilized area?

Bows can go into bow-cases and/or non-composite bows can be unstrung (my information has it that composite bows generally remained strung).

All sorts of weapons can be placed onto a horse or left at lodgings. Smaller weapons can be placed onto belt hooks or loops. Most adventurers without a horse would probably rig up some way of carrying larger weapons strapped to their backs _if_ they were not primary weapons.

Beyond that, I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

BTW, Noldor is plural, thus Noldor Elves or Noldo Elf.

Although, to be really pedantic, both are probably oxymorons, hence simply Noldo or Noldor. ;)

You've obviously never met the infamous Noldor halflings of doom.

Ah, hong, another who has fallen victim to that fallacy. I don't know who started that Noldor furphy, but they are actually Vanyar halflings of doom.

I have it in the back of my mind that composite bows were more susceptible to being strung for long periods than self-bows. I think this notion comes from some distant recollection of Parthians having carried an extra bow so they could always have one strung while the other was allowed to "rest".

Does anyone know the truth concerning this matter? I'd be interested to hear...

Big weapons can remain at home. Unless it's the kind of city where I'm likely to need them, in which case they should go in their normal place (belt for medium, hand for bows or polearms)

My PCs generally leave their bigger weapons at the inn when they don't expect to need them, with a dagger or three for self defense. Swords may be acceptable, but larger or less elegant weapons may carry heavy social penalties.

Bowcases and unstringing for bows.
Peace knots with the weapons in hangers, scabards or baldrics for swords, hammers, maces, smaller axes and the like.
Backstraps for some larger weapons and axes which cannot hang from one's belt.
The Inn, campsite or with your mounts for weapons not easily carried.
As a walking stick for staves and some polearms.

Hope this helps :) .

It depends on the location. But most "City" guardsmen will not put up with adventurers wearing armor heavier than Leather, and a weapon bigger than a Dagger. This is an affront to their ability to protect someone within their city.

If someone can prove that he is trustworthy (like a paladin or cleric of a local god, or the retainer of a local lord) than medium weapons might be carried. Bows and Large weapons must be left wherever the PCs are stayiing.

Of course, most of the PCs (in my campaign and the ones I run in) buy mithral shirts that they wear under their clothing. One can't be too carefull.
