Caster Level of an apprentice-level caster?

The table in DMG P.40 have marks on lay on hands and turn undead, and indicating that an apprentice-level character use them as level zero. But that mark is not on spells entry. How much is the caster level of an apprentice spell-caster? Is it zero? If so, for example, Mage Armor spell is useless for an apprentice sorcerer?

It has to be 1, otherwise just about every spell is useless.

It is 0(zero) for DCs, range and everything else that does not have to have a minimum caster level of 1 to actually function, but 1 for everything that does.

I always used ½ as an apprentice's caster level to determine duration, range and similar level-based effects.
