casting in public?

I usually let people do so with a hide or move silently check (depending on what they are trying to hide). Occasionally bluff (I use my begging and pleading to disguise spellcasting).

On the whole, however, the PC's do their best to avoid casting in public places. Not that there's any particular restriction on it, but it makes the non-adventurers nervous.

In my arcane magic heavy campaign, sorcerers cast normally. Wizardly spells are accompanied with huge pentagrams/pentacles/hermetic circles of light and tremendous chords of noise, the light color depending on the guild that trained the wizard. The color could get you in trouble, if you're casting outside your guild's area of control. If you cast and no light or noise, you should hope you just cast expeditious retreat. See the link in my sig.

This is pretty neat. Does it at all affect other spellcasters, such as when a caster uses the spellcraft skill to identify a spell being cast?

PS: Your avatar cracks me up every time.

Yes, the successes over the base difficulty affect the spellcraft roll. So someone is casting magic missle subtly, the DC is normally only an 11. The character rolls and gets a 15, 4 over the DC. Normally the spellcraft roll would be 15+spell level, in this case a 16. Because of casting subtly it is a 20.

I do think I should raise the skill check for Subtle Casting though, perhaos to 15+spell level. Though the feat has been in my games for years only one person has ever taken it, and they only used it a couple of times. So, the playtesting has been pretty minimal.

Thanks! :D That means the Super Sexy Swingin' Shaolin Simian is doing his job.

Hey, thanks! If you don't mind, I'd like to borrow this for my game, using the higher DC, to see how it works.

LOL! Indeed. I can't help myself, but I imagine your replies coming from this monkey, who looks so intelligent and thoughtful. I tend to do that with other people's avatars, too (usually only if they are humanoid, although it still happens with Sir Osis's avatar, too.). I know it's probably weird, but it's so entertaining. :o

Depend on the city or city district; in a wizard-controlled city/district as long as you are a member of the local guild it is fine as long as the spell was not illegal. If you are not; then things could be different. I lean to legalizing spell list more than generally making casting illegal due to magical items.

I have had player’s PC ‘sued’ for casting in public, guy said he was turned into a newt but got better after the player cast stinking cloud in a tavern. The player was NOT a member of the guild and was fined, lost some items and served time.

Just work on a legal spell list and then state that members of local guild or temple can only perform casting. Also gives you reason to use the forgery skill! :)

Spell casting in public

Usually someone freaks out and pulls a cell phone and calls the cops, what a pain!

Oh you meant in game.....

Uh yeah...

In the current campaign I'm playing in its the Banewarrens world with a history of Witch hunting but plenty of spellcasters. As a PC wizard, I'm discrete except in crises.

Absolutely, use it at will. Feel free to drop me an email telling me how it goes over with your group.

LOL. Sir Osis' avatar often speaks to me, even when I'm NOT on the boards!
