castle ravenloft ... again?

There is a real level-drain mechanic. If the character fails a Fort save, he really loses the level. Really. I've seen it happen. Player then scared of undead. Fait accompli.

Heh, we've already had this discussion. I'm not going down that road again.

They really haven't redone many modules unless you are talking about those free conversions they did.

Yep. That's exactly what I'm talking about. The Tomb of moderately not nice stuff was the worst of those.

I don't think a free conversion that some developer or writer did as time allows is going to tell us anything about the quality of a full down harback book. Heck, they might not even have been written by the same people.

True, but somewhere along the line somebody should have said "Hell No, you are not putting that abomination on our website, free, or otherwise." By neglecting to do so, they gave it their stamp of approval, if not of officiality."

Well, it is not like it was universally hated. I heard from plenty of people that enjoyed it.

Mm-kay, you don't want to go down that road. But in one Ravenloft thread after another you'll keep tossing out extreme remarks like "undead simply can't be scary without real level drain" or "Tomb of Moderately Not Nice Stuff" or "based on this one illustration I deem this book to be terrible", which you must realize (at some level) are stated in a patently refutable manner, and thus will be refuted.

Of course someone's going to attest that there are other ways to make undead horrific than resorting to no-save no-defense permanent level-draining mook monsters. Of course folks will object to the implication that a dungeon's quality is linked to how certain the odds of a TPK are. Of course rejecting an entire book on the basis of one picture is going to garnish a rebuttal. That's all very passive-aggressive.

In each of these threads you're basically making a series of snipes--little wildly-exaggerated negative comments that you don't elaborate on sufficiently enough for anyone to get where you're coming from. Then when you're challenged to support your provocative remarks, you beg off like you don't to get into some heated debate.

Sorry if I ruin your fun, but if you keep sniping, I'll gladly keep saying "OK, let's examine the basis of your arguement". At least as long as you're criticising stuff I think is of good quality.

Case in point:

You refer to it as an abomination, so you have strong feelings about how bad it is, but you in no way articulate what was wrong with it. It seems like a pretty faithful conversion, so what's the problem?

Use the search function, I and others went over the reasons ToMSS sucked in an earlier thread months ago. I'll not clutter this thread up with it. You seem to want to start a fight every time I mention anything that I find annoying about any aspect of 3e, I dunno why, did I kick your dog or something? When my opinion is asked for, I give it. For some reason, you think I'm evil for doing so. I'll try and refrain from ruining your day by replying to any of your posts if it will help keep you in your happy place.

For the record, the monsters in the new Ravenloft module include a lot of 3E vintage beasties, a lot of undead, a lot of thematically appropriate non-undead and some truly intimidating monsters.

There are monsters in the crypts of Castle Ravenloft that some of your players will decide you just made up simply to screw them over. (They're not, though: They're from Libris Mortis and some of the MM sequels.)

There are monsters that drain various things and there are monsters that just kill in really icky ways.

I think after the first few deaths, very few players are going to be very cavalier about this dungeon. And I would be surprised if any group doesn't experience multiple deaths.
