Castle Ravenloft as a Victorian era d20 Modern game

Picked up a copy over the weekend, finally.

I think the translation to a d20 Modern period piece would go pretty smoothly. There is, however, an awful lot of stuff that needs killin’ (or rekillin’) in this adventure...some careful consideration would need to be given to ensure that the PCs have enough firepower to get the job done. The alchemal items in the Appendix are certainly a good starting point, along with a couple of bandoliers of silver buckshot.

One good PC concept would be a Smart Hero / Techie who invented various custom weapons and vampire-hunting gear...or maybe a Smart Hero / Field Scientist, applying cutting-edge 19th century science to the ancient art of vampire hunting?

I had a notion that a Russian-born hagspawn (from FR Unapproachable East) would be a neat character...all scary and malformed, but ultimately one of the good guys. Maybe a Strong / Tough / Bodyguard, or maybe just Tough Hero all the way. Works nice with the hags in the adventure, too.

Like Van Helsing's monk version of M?

One of those repeating crossbows would be pretty sweet. I had the weapons guy visualized as more blue collar than scientist...a master gunsmith, maybe from Italy (where the Beretta company started selling crossbows, then muskets, then pistols...)

I was also thinking Carnaki the Ghost-Breaker. And I like the notion of a scientist who becomes a vampire hunter and ends up studying alchemy and the occult like they are just different subfields of chemistry and physics.
