Castle Zagyg is it 3.x compatible?

I don't plan on buying the C&C rules but the Castle Zagyg stuff sounds interesting, even if the cover art isn't. So, is this stuff workable for D&D 3.x or fairly locked into C&C? Looks like some Frazetta rip-off and not very subject appropriate. Like it doesn't work with the book's title or anything. :\

I don't know what the stats look like for C&C monsters, is it fairly easy to convert?

Id check out Troll Lords Games website, they have a monsters pdf that gives you an idea what to expect.

C&C is a weird beast-not quite DnD and not quite OGL. Alot of animals abilites are stripped down and manifested differently, but reverse engineering may be hard to but not impossible. Converting older DnD is easier but d20 coversions to C&C are possible. So going the other way is doable, you may just loose somethign in the translation.

Id definately check out the Troll boards. And dragonsfoot has some talk about monsters now as we all await Monsters and Treasures.

But Castle Z would probably be worth getting if just for ideas. i cant wait to get this Castle Grey.. er Zagyg in my hands.

Converting C&C to 3.x is slightly easier than converting AD&D to 3.x. Monsters shouldn't be too much of a problem, but you will have to add feats, skills, etc. to the NPCs. (Actually, EGG is including an optional skill system for C&C in the first book, so that might help conversion a bit...)

As for the art, the guys at TLG claim that the covers are thematically related to the contents of each book. Personally, I think that the covers are a refreshing change from standard contemporary FRPG art.

Agreed.

Would it be just as easy to use...3 C&C brand orcs are listed in this encounter so I'll just use D&D orcs? That should work right?

Yeah, I'm warming up to those covers now too. I just dig the big dungeon and the Greyhawk Ruins book kicked butt, if this is anything like that....count me in. :lol:

HUUUGE warning.., that MAY work. I am not experienced with the converted power of C&C monsters versus 3E monsters. However, If the C&C monsters are closer to their AD&D counterparts, beware that a HUUUGE power gap exists between some creatures and their counterparts. For instance, people converting the old AD&D modules G1-G2-G3 (a series of modules about hill, frost, and fire giants) to 3E just by saying, "a giant is a giant, and a troll is a troll" have found that the opposition beefed up dramatically - PCs would have to be 3 to 5 levels higher to survive. Doing the same from C&C to 3E could have similar results, so compare stats carefully before deciding that.

That's a legacy of 2e, incidentally.

1e => 2e => 3e

Hill Giant: HD 8+1; D 2-16 => HD 12+1; D 9-19 =>HD 12+48; D 12-26
Frost Giant: HD 10+1; D 4-24 => HD 14+1; D 11-25 => HD 14+70; D 16-31
Fire Giant: HD 11+2; D 5-30 => HD 15+2; D 12-30 => HD 15+75; D 18-33

Cheers!

1edADnD giants are a little off in your calculation. the hp additions were variable. 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 etc... depending on the race.

This is generally correct, but is mostly a function of hit dice difference with attendant Con bonuses. For combat, C&C monsters have an attack bonus equal to number of hit dice, similar to AD&D, and somewhat bridges the gap between the progressions for the monster classes in d20 and their Str derived attack bonuses.

Converting C&C to 3.x is slightly easier than converting AD&D to 3.x.
In other words, easier than pie.

The only concern would be, though, if C&C/Castle Zagyg came up with a bunch of brand new monsters. Then there will be some serious problems.

For the most part. To be sure, simply calculate the 3e "EL" of the encounter.
