Castles & Crusades (box set) playtest report

Yo-hoo! I just got my copy. I'm #156 as it seems. I've read through most of it, I've smelt the paper, and I've tried out the crayon. It's neat, workable, and features some really nice artwork.

After the first reading I began making houserules. This is the most fun I've had with a small box since I first got my hands on an RPG. This has to be playtested soon.

Wasn't there info on all the classes in a thread around here?

Frostmarrow,

Yes there was a thread a few months ago that answered a bunch of questions about the game, following the end of the NDA. Strangely, the NDA with respect to the PHB was subsequently put in place. Or at least the same playtesters that previously were "telling all" about how the game works suddenly clamed up about many things.
:\

I have no idea why this was done. And it does not make sense to "reinvoke" a NDA, especially since the information had already been put out there (both at ENWorld and RPGNet -- I assume elsewhere too). Plus the box set is out now as well.

In any case, I copied and pasted some of the information from that earlier thread. Here it is.

(I am reasonably confident that I am not doing anything wrong here. I did not sign the NDA. And, in any case, all this information is freely available if you search for it here or at RPG.net. Oh yeah, since this stuff was posted well over a month ago, it may not 100 percent reflect what will be contained in the PHB.)

Hmmmm... not sure why that was done but oh well. I think it will open up again within the week as the book finally goes to print, but don't quote me!

Steve is taking one of our older modules (the Lion in Ropes) and converting it to C and C. It will be a free PDF download available later this week and will likely contain one or two more classes (Ranger being one of them).

I'll get with him this afternoon to see what the release timeon that will be.

Question: How much of the book is Open Game Content? If any?

Looking at the tedious legal thingie at the end of the box set Player's book, it looks like anything that is "distinctly C&C" -- essentially, only the SEIGE mechanic, and maybe a few other minor things (like specific class abilities) -- is not OGC. Everything else is taken or adapted from the SRD, and thus OGC.

I accidentally started a new thread with the following question (sorry!):

After much labour, I tried to submit a review of the C&C box set just now, but was unable to do so because the C&C box set was not listed as an "option".

I then tried to PM Henry (who kindly directed me to the review page in the first place) but could not do so either (I lacked "permission").

So "HELP" Enworld! I worked hard on this review, and think it is quite honest (it goes into considerable detail on the advantages and disadvantages of the system in question).

I would love to submit this review. Just tell me how to do it.

Thanks Akrasia! I had already found it. I also uncovered the following:

Monk abilities:
Mind over body
Stunning attack
Unarmed attack
Unarmored defense
Deflect arrows
Fast movement (3rd lvl)
Ki strike (3rd lvl)
Slow fall (4th lvl)
Purity of body (5th lvl)
Still body (6th lvl)
Fast healing (7th lvl)
Still mind (9th lvl)
Quivering palm (12th lvl)
