Oh, it's certainly Epic. Whether or not it's epic is another question, but if you think epic only means that the PCs are better than just about anyone else around, that's not really how I'd define epic. As Dr. Nunch said earlier, Frodo and Sam are the central characters of the quintessential fantasy epic, and they would probably be considered low-level grunts in a game system.
Epic-level games ought to redefine the way your characters ineract with the world, as well as their understanding of the big picture...
Who knows, perhaps it's all there, but it's not the impression I get when I read about someone (IMO, again, a matter of taste) wasting time having a 40th or 50th level character fight hordes of fire giants. You have the power and (presumably, by that level) the wisdom to re-shape the fabric of reality and visit other planes of existance at will, and you're fighting grunts on a battlefield?
And as far as the "better than just about anyone else" issue is concerned - well, that's a pretty integral part of Epic-Level play. Not so you can get into pissing contests or ego-trip, but because it's what makes for a different gaming experience. If the "grunts" stay matched to your power level, you might as well be playing Diablo.
