Catastrophic Dragons in 5e

I love the idea of dragons as real forces of nature and not just reptiles with spells and a breath weapon. These are truly mythic...

I agree! Actually, because they're so mythic, the inclusion of wyrmlings weirds me out -- what is this acknowledgment of the biological life cycle of the Tornado?!

That said, nothing forces me to use 'em.

Good show!

Hahahaha. Yeah wyrmlings are strange, but they were in 4e, so I thought some people might miss them if I didn't have them. Like you said, they're easy enough to lose! Thanks for the feedback!

Hey all. I put all the catastrophic dragons from 4e converted to 5e in a pdf. Let me know what you think!

Great idea on converting these dragons, I've thought about it myself. However, I do have one quick question regarding these conversions. In 4e the catastrophic dragons where similar in level to "true" dragons, but they where elites, not solos. This made them significantly weaker. Based on this your CR's seem a bit high to me. What was your thought process in converting the CR?

Thanks, Dave. Great question. I loved the catastrophic dragons, but for fifth edition I wanted them to be able to compete with the beefier dragons that already existed. 5e combats, in my experience, are quick and brutal with weaker creatures, so to get close to the payoff of the catastrophic aura, these baddies needed to be tough.

I also just prefer catastrophic dragons being on par with true dragons because I think they're badass.
