and why the heck are we getting a 'scheduled update'? Wasnt the whole point of putting the danged thing online that they could make running changes to it? If they have a data fix they need to make, MAKE IT! Dont tell me you're going to pay me next Tuesday for that hamburger!

They did. You just did not notice. Today (12/20/2010) the version number is 1.6.0. Last week it was 1.5.5. I am assuming tomorrow the version will be higher again.

There ae two types of updates that will be happening.

The background updates to the part of the program that lies on the WotC servers will be able to be done on the fly. Updates that require an update to the silverlight client that is downloaded will be scheduled.

That is the application number of the Silverlight ap they are using for the builder. It has nothing to do with the data set version number (which is not displayed anywhere). This was posted on the WOTC forums awhile back.
