From my understanding, we can't see the people approaching. They are around the bend, but we can hear them chanting. We're still in the hallway and there's a barricade into the room to the west. I'll try and throw up a map that may make the situation more clear when I get back from lunch.
Yes. It's either chanting-in-anticipation-of-battle or chanting-we're-interrupting-a-Temple-of-Doom-heart-removing-ceremony. If the former (suggested by the barricade, if it's hastily constructed), I can maybe get us by; if the latter, we're trying to get by a (guarded?) barricade.
NB: Guran has Dex 14 and Colden has Dex 13, so in a tie for Initiative, Guran acts first.
OOC:
The default marching order is: Guran, [10' of space], Roscoe, Colden, Spec, Fulgrim. Currently, however, you all are not occupying the default marching order. Pursuant to the descriptive text in the last couple pages' worth of play, we have Guran and Colden standing side by side in front of the ajar door in the narrow corridor, and everyone else clustered haphazardly 35' away from Guran and Colden, back at the t-intersection of the hallway and the narrow corridor. The narrow corridor is 45' long in its entirety. The ajar door looks like it opens to a room, but there is a heap of jumbled broken furniture piled up in the room's doorway that precludes seeing or moving inside the room.
Everyone please state a surprise round action for your character. You're aware that creatures are coming toward you, but you have yet to see whatever it/they is/are.
Everyone is aware of the torchlight coming from beyond the dogleg at the southern terminus of the narrow corridor you occupy. You all hear the guttural sounds made by the voices of what sounds like at least three creatures, though it is hard to determine how many distinct voices there are given the bend in the corridor and the distance. You also all hear the soft rhythmic chanting that started up just a moment ago. The chanting emanates from around the bend in the corridor.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can clarify before we begin combat rounds. If I can tell you within the confines of what you have been able to discern thus far, I will do so.
Got to do something during the surprise round. Since I'm top of initiative.
When the ceremonial chanting stops, Father Spec pokes his head around the dogleg. Depending on what he sees, he either (a) moves forward employing the Dodge action, or (b) will cast a spell and retreat.
Alright, I'm not even late yet, because the Initiative order is not yet fully set. I'm basing Guran's action on his speed and the distances, because right now the party is split by a distance of 35 feet from the T-intersection to the open door.
[CB's quote: "we have Guran and Colden standing side by side in front of the ajar door in the narrow corridor, and everyone else clustered haphazardly 35' away from Guran and Colden, back at the t-intersection. . . "]
Guran's thrown weapons (of which he carries a dagger, 2 handaxes, and a light hammer) are each Range (20/60), so he's not going back to the T-intersection to attack, if attack be needed, since any thrown attack would be at disadvantage at a distance of 45 feet to the dogleg.
OOC:
I already had Guran suggest to Colden that a retreat would be good, in my Iniative post, #607, saying: "Guran's Non-Action #2: He suggests to Colden that the party retreat around the corner --." Now we also have Colden willing to move back if Guran comes.
Guran cannot get all the way back to the party (35 feet) using his 25 feet of movement in the surprise round, so he won't try.
[Guran's surprise-round action: Movement.]
Guran motions to Colden to back up a few yards, but follows only a distance of 10 feet, putting him 20 feet from the dogleg and 25 feet from the rest of the party at the T-intersection. Turning, Guran draws a handaxe, ready to throw if the approaching creatures are hostile. Guran listens to the voices and chanting to see whether he can understand a word of it.
I called for Init 36 hours ago, so I'm taking the liberty of moving us along by rolling Init for Roscoe. Roscoe Initiative 6. Now that initiative order is established, hopefully this permits you to interact more fully with the encounter. I suspect some of the hesitation to act is that you have only limited information about the nature of the threat, but, well, limited info is reasonable given the situation. Whatever it is is around the bend in the corridor, out of sight for the moment.
Edit: I forgot Skarsgard rolled for Colden. Colden's init is 18. On my way to re-edit the post above! Thanks!
