D&D 5E CB's Stonefast IC -- COMPLETE

Spec attempts to unlock the door, aided by Guran.

OOC: Okay, I'll roll here; I think since Guran doesn't have expertise in thieves' tools (only proficiency) and also has a 14 dex, they're on a par here. So an advantaged attempt will be the better of [roll0] and [roll1].

After a careful twist, jiggle, and click, the door yields to Spec and Guran, revealing a short narrow corridor that heads south for fifteen feet, then turns sharply to the east. Spec, who was first into the corridor after opening the door, spots a closed door just around the corner, in the hallway. Like nearly all the doors in this place, this one is fashioned of oak and has iron bands across its front, with iron hardware for a handle. The door is closed.

Standing near the closed door, Guran whispers to Spec: "Is it trapped?"

If necessary, he helps the cleric check the closed door for traps.

"Thank you, my lad. Very good."

Spec, now holding the rope and attuned to it, bends down on one knee and investigates the lock.

Looking at the tiny corridor, and the twin thick doors, he says, "Might I suggest we keep the other door open for a moment? It's just possible that the two are linked."

"Fulgrim? Could you move that door on its hinges, but please be careful not to close it in."

He casts the light cantrip on the wall right beside the next lock. "Sorry Roscoe -- I'll give the light back to you in a moment. Guran -- what do you think that is?"

OOC: Advantage Investigation: better of [roll0] and [roll1].
And, if Thieves tools are needed to disable a trap or open the door (while still keeping the other door open):
the better of [roll2] and [roll3].

Spec kneels down--the stone floor grinding a little into his knees--and examines the iron hardware on the new door. Fine filaments just barely discernible inside the keyhole indicate to Spec that not only is the door locked, it's also trapped. A rime of frost on those filaments indicates that something unusual may be at work, but Spec isn't sure just what that something is, exactly. Regardless, caution is probably best exercised.

OOC: A character other than Spec who, like Spec, is proficient in Intelligence (Arcana) may attempt a check, but you'll need to get right up next to the door, and Spec will too because he'll have to explain what you're looking at.

"Uh, . . ." Guran begins, squinting at the interior of the lock in confusion. "That . . . looks frosty. I don't see why it would be, though. This . . . yeah, I think I'm out of my element, here. Sorry, Father. I want to help, but I think I'm licked on this one. Let me back off here and let someone else into this spot."

Nodding to Father Spec, Guran squeezes back the way they came, past Roscoe and Colden and even Fulgrim, telling the wizard there's something that baffles him about the inner door, and saying that the cleric might need more educated help than Guran can provide. He cajoles Fulgrim that the most storied victories are often achieved over great obstacles, and adds that this might be such an opportunity.

OOC: I was thinking I should fob off the Inspiration bonus that Guran received for the long rest in the ossuary room onto Fulgrim, in order to give him advantage on his Arcana check. However, I see in the rules that giving it to someone else is supposed to occur after an exemplary event, not before; and we haven't done much of note since resting, so perhaps I shouldn't do that now. However, if foisting the Inspiration onto Fulgrim for this is doable, let's do that.

OOC: I might be inspired right now, actually. I can't remember if I used it or not. I know i got inspiration from drinking the beer against all possible sane judgement. I think I'll hold off on using it here. Fulgrim will not be using Guidance, he's suspicious of this god Spec worships who he has never heard of before.

Arcana: [roll0]

Looks like he was wise to stick with his Dwarven gods. ;)

At Guran's behest, Fulgrim moved into the room to inspect the mystery. "I'm always interested in mysteries," he said to no one in particular. Squatting down, he examined the magically frosted area with help from Father Spec.

Spec pointed out the wire filaments, and Fulgrim could easily spot the rime of frost on the handle's hardware. Someone had trapped this door, alright, but it was no mechanical trap. The wire filaments were a red herring that, if clipped, were undoubtedly meant to lure the unsuspecting intruder into a false sense of security. Instead, someone had layered on a potentially lethal bit of cold magic that, if sprung, would likely kill or severely damage those unable to dodge it. Though it wasn't a spell currently in his arsenal, Fulgrim recalled something similar he'd once seen in a library in Waterdeep; that spell was labeled ice storm and had the ability to pelt a 40' high cylinder with a radius of 20' with shards of ice strong enough to pierce skin. The spell's scribe made mention of Aetherius the Aged having once witnessed the spell being cast, with the result that three stirges caught inside the tube froze to death within the space of mere seconds.

Can we overcome the frost trap? surely the Orcs that fled earlier placed it yes?
Roscoe says and he leans on the back of his sword.
Unless there is another secret passage that lead somewhere else. We can search for such a passage or turn back.
