Fulgrim frowned. "That's a good point, Roscoe. The orc that fled our attacks came this way and I would be surprised if it was capable of circumventing this nefarious trap. Perhaps we should look for a secret door. The trap that was placed here is quite potent and would likely effect all of us if we were to set it off. The filaments are a lie..."

Roscoe begin to search for a secret door around but the poor light conditions (Sped took the light) and his poor experience yield nothing.
Perception: 1d20 5
Unless we find something we'll have to return the way we came and try another route. The absence of the beast's footprint tells me she went in another direction. We can try the ceiling or return to the doors where the main gates are.
 

Fulgrim examined the lock closer. Was this a fool's trap? Dwarves were known for their dislike of thieves and had developed a number of entertaining and clever traps to trip them up. One was a trick that made it appear that a door was trapped, drawing in the thief to attempt to disarm the trap. The trick was that the trap, if not fooled with, would never trigger. It only did so if someone attempted to disarm it.

OOC: From the description, it says if the filaments are cut, the trap triggers. Fulgrim is trying to see if there is a way to open the door without messing with the wire filaments, which seem to be a trap specifically set for thieves.

Fulgrim stands at the door and has a good think. Roscoe starts hunting around the latest room and the hallway just outside the room's open door, but finds no evidence of the orc he seeks or a secret door--at least not in this area.
OOC: Clarification: the wire filaments are a red herring. Cutting them disarms nothing, Fulgrim thinks. The door seems to be trapped, but the trap is likely a magical trap that would need to be dispelled. Or somehow bypassed. Or just trigger it and suffer the trap's damage, depending on your desire.
 

OOC: There is light in the room outside the first door: Guran had cast the Light cantrip on his own armor.


Guran decides to follow Roscoe's example, and does his own search for doors in that room and in the hallway outside it, looking not only on the walls but on the ceiling and floor. (WIS (Perception))

Disappointed, Guran tells the others he cannot find any hidden door. He asks Fulgrim to describe the effect of the trap; when he hears the description, he thanks the wizard and thinks some more. It takes him a while. He goes to the first of the two doors -- i.e. the one they had already opened and passed through to reach the trapped door. Guran swings it as far open as he can, then retreats to the short hallway that ends at the north entrance of the room. He looks to see how much of the trapped door he can see from just inside the hallway.

OOC: Holding up a straightedge to the latest map we got, it looks as if a person standing just outside the room at the east end of the stub hallway, at the north entrance of the room, would be able to see most of the locked door if the opened door were swung out of the way. Izzat so?

"It might be," says Father Spec, chewing the problem over in his mind. "We just wouldn't know until we tried. If we wanted all to clear out, I would suggest we first try to spring it -- Fulgrim, would you perhaps have a spell that would allow you to attempt to open the door at range? We could try that, with everyone else clear of the narrow corridor. If that could not be done safely, we could proceed."

Spec does not contribute to the secret door search. He's usually pretty observant, and if he's not seen it on his own, already, and he is focused on the current problem.

Guran had a light on his armor--he'd cast a cantrip a bit earlier to make it so, so wherever Guran goes is, for the time being, well-lit. Same for Spec, who cast his own light cantrip. Guran exited the room and, like Roscoe, began hunting for doors. Neither he nor Roscoe found any. Guran retreated all the way to the first door of the previous room. He stood in the doorway, looking to see whether he had line of sight to the trapped door. He did, if only just. He had to gaze past two very near corners formed by intervening walls, but he could make out the trapped door.

I agree, Spec's passive perception of 21 is very high; in fact, it's the highest I've seen to date in a 5e game. If it is a comfort to you, I have been factoring that in. :) This is a tougher than usual puzzle.
