Centaur characters and mounted combat feats

Can a centaur fighter (or other centaur character) take feats like Ride-By Attack and Spirited Charge? If so, does he need the prerequisites (Ride skill, Mounted Combat), and does he get anything out of them?

AFAIK Yes he can take them, yes he does need the prerequisites, and yes he does gain their benfits but only if he is mounted on another creature.

Ummm... does that only apply to the prerequisites, or is it true that he doesn't get the benefits of ANY of the mounted combat feats unless he's mounted on another creature?

spectrum rider - hopefully i can cut to the chase for you:
there is no official rule regarding this.

It is the DM's call - whatever feels right for him (and hopefully the players).

Yes by the wording of the feats they only apply to mounted characters. If you want to house rule that the centaur counts as a mount and rider for the porpuse of these feats you can. This is an area where realism and the rules do not mesh well but the rules are clear. To get the benefit of mounted feats one must be mounted.

According to "Races of Faerun";
"Centaurs can acquire the Spirited Charge and Trample feats (ignoring the prerequisites) and apply the benefits to their own melee attacks."

Probably should be considered FR variant rule
(unless this get included in MM revised)
but I think it makes sense.

I wonder why they left out Mounted Archery and Ride-By Attack.

Mounted archery...

So, why does a centaur needs a feat to shoot a bow like everyone else?

Mounted Combat...

well, thats a backdoor to a parry feat for Centaurs and if it was made avaible to a character, the other characters should get a similar feat ... based on tumble perhaps.

Ride - by - attack

= Spring Attack, at least in my eyes.

I always assumed the penalty comes from the speed the mount's moving at. A Centaur that's galloping at full speed should have the same penalties as a guy on a horse galloping at full speed.

Fantastic - I'm glad they finally put something out that talked to this hole some.
Good reference - I haven't been able to pick up Races of Faerun yet.
