Centauroids and feats

Okay, so supposing you're playing a Centaur, or GMing a Wemic and you want him to fulfill the Heavy Cavalry role nature has so clearly intended for him.

How do you get to Ride-by-attack, Spirited Charge, and Trample when Mounted Combat is out of the question?

You could take the ranks in ride and waste the mounted combat feat before taking the other feats if the DM allows. If you want a precedent although not a rule check out the ZELEKHUT inevitable from the MM

Feats: Due to its centaur-like construction, a zelekhut qualifies for feats as if it had the Mounted Combat feat.

or you could take centaur trample from Races of the Wild (I think). The book doesn't offer the other mounted combat feats possibly due to balance issues of not suffering other penalties of being mounted

Instead of Ride-by-Attack, you take Spring Attack. Sorry, but Ride-by only works because you have two creatures working together. One to concentrate on movement and one to concentrate on attacking. If you let a centaur take Ride-by-attack, then why can't your average barbarian take it? After all, he can move his legs to charge and swing his arms to attack at the same time, just like the centaur.

The same for Spirited Charge. What can a centaur do that (say) an ogre can't do? Spirited Charge works (as I interpret it) because the rider can shift position as the attack happens. But a centaur is joined to his lower half. He can't suddenly slide his upper torso forward along his horse half.

I don't see any reason a centaur can't take Trample as a feat with no prerequisites, though.

As others noted: you don't get the first two (besides, Ride-by Attack is covered by Spring Attack), and Trample is covered by the "Centaur Trample" feat from Races of the Wild.

I could, however, see a house rule for somehow allowing a version of Spirited Charge if the image of a charging lance-wielding centaur is important to your game [and when wouldn't it be! ;) ] - maybe skipping the requirement for Mounted Combat, much like Prism points out above with the Zelekhut example, and requiring Spring Attack as a prerequisite instead of Ride-by Attack.

By grabbing the Races of Faerun book which spotlight Centaur as PC, benefit-wise. Personally, I should have picked up that book instead of Races of the Wild (that spotlight ... the raptorrans).

Actually, I just flipped through that book, and while it gives a page or so of fluff on how centaurs fit into Faerun, there are no new feats or rules for adapting mounted feats for centaurs.
