Centaurs / Wemic characters and the Mounted feats

Can a Centaur, or the like creatures, take any of the Mounted Feats?
How does it work (with the "ride" checks for example) ?

It seems to me that they should be able to take them, specially the ones that imply Combat Maneuvers but I don´t know if its allowed or not (my guess is its not...)

Please share your thoughts

(If this goes into House Rules I apologize, It's kinda blur the line since I'm asking for both rules and experiences)

well, technically, a centaur can't have them. they take the regular version. a centaur doesn't take penalties for fighting from horseback which is what some of them do. mobility and spring attack fill in the movement ones.

what feats in particular were you looking into?

From memory, there's a rule in Races of Faerun that says yes. But I don't have the book - you'd have to ask someone who has it.

Personally, I have to ask "why should centaurs/wemics/etc get access to the mounted feats without a mount?"

I mean, maybe to some it seems obvious "well, they're kinda like a mounted critter, but not quite".

I ask - what makes them so special? Why shouldn't an ogre barbarian get extra damage from using a lance during a charge? He moves as fast as a centaur, he's the same size and bulk (arguably, he's larger and more bulky, because his strength is 3 points higher). What factor is it that lets a centaur use a lance for double damage, but not an ogre barbarian?

But suddenly, if he grows another two legs, the ogre barbarian gets all these advantages?

That's the physical real-world question. What's the physical quality that allows the use of mounted feats and extra lance damage?

Beyond that, there's the game-world question. What aspect of the combat mechanics are such rules supposed to address. The mounted-combat-dodge rule is there so that mounts aren't toast at high levels (they still are, but less so with the rule). The increased damage rules on a charge rules are there because you're effectively making a single attack with two creatures. Other feats are just analogues of feats that regular combatants can get anyway. All up, they make mounted combat a viable style, despite it's weaknesses (reliance on a skill, reliance on a relatively frail mount etc).

So why should a centaur get these benefits? He doesn't need the skill, and he doesn't need to use a frail mount.

Hypersmurf is right. In the Centaur section in Races of Faerun, it says that "centaurs can acquire the Spirited Charge and Trample feats (ignoring the prerequisites) and apply the benefits to their own melee attacks." (p. 132)

Saeviomagy, I agree with you 237%. But I do have a quick question:

What is the "mounted-combat-dodge rule"?

Use of the Mounted Combat feat.

Basically, using your Ride skill to let your mount 'dodge' an attack.

....Ah. Okay, thanks for the clarification. The way it was phrased, I was expecting something other than just using the Mounted Combat feat. :p

Interesting. So, does it also say centaurs get to deal double damage with a lance?

We've been having a discussion about this on the www.dragonlanceforums.com message forums, and the argument's mainly been about the double damage with lance thing. One poster apparently got a word from "Steve" at WOTC customer service telling him that yes, they do - that a centaur has all the benefits of being mounted.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Cam
