Challenge Rating of Petitioners?

Most of the petitioners of outer planes get immunities, resistances and additional special abilities. They are like templates, and seem to be stronger ones. Yet, I cannot find any rule for adjusting CR for petitioners. How much should be the CR modifier for, say Petitioners of Acheron? They get immunities to Electricity and Sonic, Resistance 20 to Cold and Fire, and abilities to give combat bonuses to comrades.

Edit: According to 3.5e update PDF, now resistances of Acheron Petitioners have been lowered (cold resistance 10, fire resistance 10).

Warning - Manual of the Planes is a 3.0 book - so some of the things present may not match up real well in 3.5.

I'll check the book when I get home to see if I can find anything.

II know there was some errata to that book though - did you check it?

I checked both Manual of the Planes errata and 3.5e update PDF for it. Actually, resistances are somewhat lowered (now cold resistance 10, fire resistance 10). But I cannot find any information regarding CR modifier.

And now I found the answer in chapter 9 of the MotP. By default, petitioners lose class levels and has fixed CR. But in some published modules, there are petitioners who retain stats of original creatures and yet have special abilities as petitioners. I guess I should make up rules for them.

I don't have Manual of the Planes and only Lord of the Iron Fortress as a 3e outer planar module, but in the divine section of the SRD which pulls stuff from deities and demigods Divine Minions :: d20srd.org they have an entry for petitioners with a section on exceptional petitioners.

Exceptional Petitioners
The deities may choose particular servants for specific tasks that may retain the knowledge of their previous selves. These exceptional petitioners retain the feats and skills they had in life, but are otherwise limited as for the petitioners of their plane.

Having former feats, skills, and knowledge does not seem to warrant an increase in CR unless you are using some sort of skill or feat power system.

Do the module petitioners have different HD or retain other class features?

Yes the module is Lord of the Iron Fortress. The leader of the wondering mercykillers retains all the stats as L13 Aasimar Cleric and yet has additional abilities as Acheron Petitioner.

I think MotP adressed this. I seem to recall it stating that when a soul becomes a petitioner it loses all class level except in some special cases where the soul was particularly storng (10+ level) in which case it would keep them.
