Challenging Character

So here is one for all you 4e aficionados. I am playing a gnome paladin of Kord (secretly of Gruumsh). I'm doing this largely for roleplaying reasons, but I do want to be reasonably useful in a fight. I'm about to be 8th level. So far I've taken the feats: Devoted Paladin, Virtuous Recovery, Lend Health, and Mounted Combat. My stats are: Str 16, Con 16, Dex 13, Int 14, Wis 16, and Cha 15. For powers I have: (at-will) valiant and holy strike, (encounter) radiant and righteous smite, strength of valor, and virtue, and (daily) Paladin's Judgement, Wrath of Gods, and Sign of Vulnerability. I'm also riding a Giant Riding Lizard. What should I do to become a tactically better character? Our cleric is probably going to be hitting the highway so we've all taken on a bit of extra healing duty.

Your ability scores are just weird. You obviously didn't start out with the regular point buy, but despite having over-all good scores your primary (Str) is still only 16. So that's not helping you out. You need to get any help you can on attack bonus.

Valiant Strike might be okay, but consider swapping out Holy Strike for Ardent Strike. You can use it on charge attacks and you get to mark more targets (and your sanction is actually decent due to your Cha score). Also look at Force of Arms as an encounter power.

Featwise... get Expertise right away if your DM lets you (two-handed weapon or spear is good). Then look for other charge-optimizing feats, though the usual cheese requires Dex 17. Additional ways to get combat advantage are good too, Cunning Stalker may be worth it depending on your combat tactics. Aggressive Advantage will help you hit at least on the first round of combat.

There isn't really a lot you can do wrong as Paladin. Full Plate, Shield, get in their face, and if they smack an ally instead of you, hit them with radiant energy.

One thing: Don't gnomes get a Charisma bonus? You would gave been better off to put your best stat into Cha and taking Cha-based powers. You don't need any Strength then, especially if you take a Cha-based at-will power that can be used as MBA.

Also, I'd drop the "secretly worshipping Gruumsh" bit. That's funny for a one-session joke character, but easily gets tired in a longer campaign. It's not like Gruumsh cares about gnomes anyway.

Ok, back story. My character lived in a town on the border of the Feywild and the Prime Material Plane (if that is still what it's called). The town was within the boundary of an eladrin baron that staged hunts of various humanoids and other beasts during certain periods of the year as an ancient rite. Eventually he raided my character's town, partially out of jealousy for the lucrative business that the gnomes were doing thanks to their location. He took several gnomes for his hunt. My character was one. He was chained to an elderly orc shaman for several months. As he watched the other gnomes he'd grown up with, as well as the other creatures, get taken out, their heads gruesomely displayed as trophies after they were caught, he began to question his growing fascination with the slaughter. The orc told him that it was Grummsh beckoning to him. After viciously killing a young eladrin noble that had come for the hunt, my character managed to escape to Faerun. He knew of the god of battle Tempus (Kord, we are using the names interchangeably) and knew that Tempus would make a good cover for his true allegiances. "Tempus is the god of generals; men who move armies about on little maps. Wars and battles are savage and brutal. Honor is a game played by fools. There is no honor in battle, no right or wrong, no winners or losers. There are only those who live and those who die. Who's to say which one struck the better bargain?"
