Champion (new Cleric), Let me know what you think

I spent about 5 minutes and had the rewrites that I posted. It's not too difficult. Maybe I'll take some time next week and do a rewrite of some more from other books. I'm not overly worried about how crazy some Domains might get. When this is the only power you get, it should be good.

Maybe a level 1 only choice (destined from birth...), and if you multi-class you can never return - less restrictive but limits the abuse as you can't optimise...

Redoing domain powers might be worthy of a thread in its own right - and theres bound to be a lot of comments on it

Would advise staying as close to the SRD as possible - with maybe a base power and an enhanced power for each domain that could be gained in play - mix the current power and the suggested alterations and that should give the options desired.

What about adding higher level abilities to Domains instead of adding more? You've been talking about starting with a small number of Domains and adding to that as you level up. What about just having the 4 Domains, but they also get enhanced abilities based on your Champion level?
The reason that I'm going to do more Domains is for the simple fact that people use other books. I've changed the Domains from the PHB that I think need changing. The other Domains in the PHB can stay exactly how they are.

No reason you can't do a mix of both (enhanced abilities, and more domains) as you level up

I just thought it would be a nice mechanic that you get the option of new domain, or enhanced domain ability at certain levels. So you could go for lots of spell choice, but basic abilities or decent abilities but more limited spell choice (you could even balance ability versus spell utility, which will be a factor for players' choice)

or you could keep it simple and have set domains and grow into them so to speak - the example you used of weapon focus going to weapon spec etc is simple enough

I'm DMing tonight, so i'll bounce it off a few people and see what they think (I've told them i'm considering scrapping the base cleric so that should get their interest....)

What's the verdict? Did they decide to go with it? Thoughts?

Distinct cool reception from one of the current clerics, but then he's a rules lover and always accuses me of unbalancing games by adding flavour...... also pointed out that if you use gestalt rules then that makes for a different feel than standard rules, something i hadn't thought of

Other player who plays fighter / cleric was interested, but wanted to look at the detail first before commiting - he was suffering from food poisoning at the time so might get a more detailed response later

others either didn't care or just saw it as another option

sorry its not more detailed - they'll perk up after i've rewritten one of the big bad guys cohorts as a champion.......

How did your first session go - wasn't it sunday?

Originally, I wrote up a Binder/Champion. This past Sunday, though, we had 2 other guys show up. I knew beforehand that I might need some other characters, so I made a Binder and I made a Champion. I ended up choosing the Binder for the game. It was neck-and-neck, though. I've just wanted to play it for so long that this group seemed perfect for it. If he dies, though, I'll make a Champion. I'm still fiddling with some things for him. This is the end of the semester, so I've kinda been busy getting tests made up and wrapping it up for my students, so I haven't had the time that I wanted to really work on expanding and testing the Champion. Actually, for those days when not everyone is there, we're probably going to have a separate game. I'll probably do a Champion in that.
