Champion of the Feather PrC

Quetzocoatl

First Post
This PrC was done pretty hastily (and the flavor even hastier), so its probably outta whack in a couple of ways. In concept, its very similar to the Holy Liberator (I stole a few abilities), but with a different spin. I'm wondering if I should drop the BAB to that of the druid, since this guy gets a ton of abilities. Please provide feedback. :)

As Versier walked down the palace hall, the corners of his mouth turned up in a secret smile. His plan was working beautifully; all of his months of work were finally going to bear the fruit of success. He looked down at his gold ring encrusted fingers, and realized that they already had.

It had been all too easy, dominating that weak willed excuse for a king. Once he had gotten close to the monarch, a few words and a wave of the hand transformed the benevolent savior of the realms to the tyrannical oppressor of the land, who made sure his closest ‘advisor’ was very well paid. Versier’s smile widened. In a few minutes that tyrant would be announcing a full doubling in taxes.

Or so Versier believed.

As he approached the doors of the King’s main chamber, Versier felt apprehension rising in him. He had no idea why; this would be as easy as sitting down with the ‘king’ and telling him what to do. He had done things like this countless times before, and never once was nervous. Except for now. Nevertheless, Versier continued on, chalking it up to the sight of that dirty elf outside the palace earlier today. Perhaps he’d ‘recommend’ the slavery of all non-humans today as well. Yes, that’s what he would do…

Versier pushed open the door, and immediately knew something was wrong. The king was sitting in his chair, facing the door. His eyes were different; no longer clouded and distant. “Its over, Versier,” the king said in a firm tone. He hadn’t spoken like that in a long time. Versier felt the grip of gauntlet hands on his shoulder, “Guards, take him away.”

As Versier was pulled out of the room, he thought he spotted a hawk, sitting on the king’s windowsill, smiling.

Champion of the Feather

The bird has always been a symbol of freedom, and none so embrace that symbol as the Champions of the Feather. The champions of the feather are men and women who have a unique bond with birds and believe that birds stand for the ideals of liberty and good. Champions hate to see any living creature bound or enslaved, and use their special powers for the purpose of freeing themselves and others from all forms of confinement. Perhaps the most well known feature of the champions is their ability to assume the forms of many types of birds. They often have a network of avian friends for spying and scouting. Most Champions are rangers, but druids are also very common. Many multiclass fighters, rogues, clerics, sorcerers, bards, barbarians, and ex-paladins follow this path as well.

Friend of the Feather: At first level, the Champion of the Feather becomes a friend of all birds. He can constantly communicate with avian creatures (regular birds, as well as extraordinary avian creatures such as Giant Owls and Rocs), as if by the spell Speak with Animals . This is a supernatural ability. In addition, he can cast a specialized version of the Animal Friendship spell once per day per Champion level as a spell-like ability. This identical to the said spell in all ways except only birds may be affected by it.

Eagle Eyes: At second level, the Champion’s sense of sight becomes more acute. He gains a +2 bonus on spot checks. This bonus increases to +4 at sixth level and +6 at tenth. Eagle Eyes is an extraordinary ability.

Resist Enchantment: At second level, the Champion becomes resilient to all attempt to control his mind. He gains a +2 moral bonus on all saving throws against enchantment spells and effects. This is an extraordinary ability.

Avian Form: At third level, the Champion gains the supernatural ability to assume the form of avian creatures. This ability is identical to the druid’s Wildshape, except in the following ways:
  • It may be used the listed number of times per day
  • Only the forms of avian animals can be assumes (except for the below exceptions). The avian animals found in the Monster Manual are: Eagle, Hawk, Owl, and Raven.
  • At seventh level, the champion may choose to become a Giant Eagle or Giant Owl by virtue of this ability.
  • At ninth level, the champion may choose to become a Roc by virtue of this ability.
Uncage: By spending five minutes in conversation with a character who is under the influence of a charm or compulsion effect, a champion of at least fourth level can help that character break free of the enchantment. As a full-round action, the champion touches the enchanted creature (making a melee touch attack roll if necessary) and invokes the power within himself. The enchanted creature immediately makes a new saving throw, using his own saving throw bonus plus the champion’s charisma modifier (if positive). If the result equals or exceeds the DC of the original saving throw, the character is freed from the charm or compulsion effect. Uncage is a supernatural ability.

Slippery Mind: At eighth level, the Champion of the Feather gains the rogue’s Slippery Mind (p 49 PHB) ability for free.

Fly Free: At tenth level, the Champion of the Feather can free himself or another of any powers that would normally inhibit his ability to move. Once per day, he can cast Freedom of Movement or Break Enchantment as a spell like ability. His caster level is his total character level for this ability.
