Changing Favored Class

Sorry... the feat only allowed to get bard/sorcerer or wizard as additional class... Some Halruan regional feat.

I'd give an additional favored class for a feat any day if I were the DM.

Rogue/Swordsage... can't he get some multiclass feat similar to the Rogue/Swashbuckler one?

We're pretty tight on book only stuff. As is he's still contemplating doing it even with the XP penalty. Looks like he'll have to make the hard decision.

Thanks folks!

He can alternate levels up to a point to ameliorate the XP issue. But that only works so far.

Note that, in Unearthed Arcana, p. 100, it's mentioned that a feat for an extra favored class seems fair. Such a feat is even included.

Ah, so you're saying he should gimp his character beyond belief? I doubt he'll go for it.
Gimp his character beyond belief? I'm not sure how switching from an elf to a half-elf is getting gimped. Doesn't this very thread support the position that Favored Class: Any is a valuable racial ability?

And don't underestimate the value of *not* having a -2 Con penalty. Having half the bonus to Search, Spot and Listen isn't that big a deal and Swordsage gives proficiency for all those weapons.

The only thing that really gets lost is the auto detect secret doors ability. Maybe that could become a feat available to half-elves.

Would Scout work instead of Rogue? Not that its an option out of the box, but with a little work and persauasion ... The first step is to start a conversation about how cool it would be to work some of the new base classes into game as new favored classes - ie Pixie changes to Spellthief, Kobold changes to Dragon Disciple, some of the Rogues and Rangers (Bugbears, Goblins, Gnolls, etc) changing to Scout. You then convince your DM that one of the elven subraces (wild or wood elf probably) should be a Scout. Then BAM! you're set :)

If he's straight powergaming why not go halfling? +2 dex along with more hp and +1 more to hit...I'm guessing most of his damage will be precision-based and extra-dice melee anyway so the small weapons and -2 str are of little consequence (not familiar with swordsage).

Cool, thanks! It's a little alte for alternating (he's 7th and won't take the level til 9th), but if I can find that feat I'm sure we'll use it.

He's straight rogue right now, and the loss of auto-detect would be the biggest problem for him He's also a finesse fighter and loves his dex mod.

He's already Rogue 7, so it's too late to swap. He's also a mostly for TWF sneak attack, so losing that wouldn't sit well with him.

Auto-detection of secret doors. Other than that halfling would be nice.

Use the retraining rules from the PHB II to "back fit" his PC to equal out levels.

They were essentially designed to allow adding in of new classes and feats that weren't in existence when the character was first created.

We already allow pretty much full respeccing when new stuff comes out, or even if a player finds something cool in an older book they hadn;t noticed before. No complete character changes, but a feat here or there or even a race is ok.

He only wants one level of swordsage (maybe more down the road, but only one for now).

If I were him, I'd just keep the levels within one of each other until I qualified for a PrC. Something like rogue 4/swordsage 5/nightsong enforcer 6/master of nine 5 would get you a lot of sneak attack and maneuvers with no exp penalty.
