Changing things mid campaign

First Post
Have you needed to change things mid camapign? Maybe a rule that is in the book isn't working out and needs house ruled or a House Rule doesn't do what you hoped. Or a PC takes a feat or prestige class and it ends up not doing in game what he hoped by taking it. THat would assume you the DM knew ahead of time why he was taking it and you agree it isn't doing what he and maybe even you thought.

How do you handle this? Do you create an in game reason for the change? Or do you just handle it through the meta game? Or do you just keep things the way they started at the beginning of the game and make a note for next game?

If its a game mechanic thing, like a "wrong" feat choosen then I would work with the player to get the "right" one instead. Especially if I thought it (feat, prestige class, whatever) would be somehow different.

My problem is while DMing I come up with new ideas that would totally change aspects of the world and find myself wishing we could start again. I guess I need to learn to see things thru instead of giving up so quickly.

I think it is OK to "meta" a solution if it's a "meta" reason that has made the rule (feat or whatever) not workable in the game. Otherwise it can be awkward trying to concoct an IC reason for such a change. Nonetheless, if there appears to be an easy way to just play through it, then certainly that's as good a way to go as any. I'm sure this comes up more an more as third party pubs add new fuel to the fire.

BTW Please, drop me an Email Crothian. I think I am having trouble reaching you through the Email address in your profile. :)

I dropped you an e-mail. I'm not sure why the e-mail address in my profile isn't working. I just tried it and it worked fine for me. But all that means is it worked fine for me.

Hmmm... Got your Email, replied, and it bounced back to me again. Do you have an alternate account?

No, and I can't figure out why things are bouncing. This isn't good.

If you want we can Hijack this thread, it is mine.

WEll, I e-mailed another person and asked him to reply back and to post here if it bounced. THe odd think is I can e-mail myself. THe program contacts the mail server and to send, and then contacts the server to recieve. At times like trhis I wish I was mor ecomputer savvy.

Yeah, that's a pain. I suppose it might ba some sort of router problem out of Chicago here. *shrug* I'll try to PM (edit- but you will have to enable private messages in your profile options if that is going to work) you and we'll take care of things that way.

Still...

No need to highjack. We can bring it back on topic by me posting something more about the subject, such as...

I've found in games that I have played that things can snowball sometimes. Such as when someone introduces a house rule, to make up for a real or imagined failing in the core rules, that then (after some play) turns out to be just as bad as the problem they originally perceived. Or worse, it turns out that the DM feels they have to adjust back to the core rule because the house rule has some bad side effect but now the player has been enjoying the house rule (because it was such a great advantage) and doesn't want to give it up. Then the solution, if the DM tries to fix it IC, is met with a huge outcry. It can get very difficult, to say the least.

That's cool, I've never used the PM part of this message board so it'll be a good, new experience. :)

I just editted my post above, after trying out the private message feature and finding out that, first, I needed to change my profile options, and second, you would have to do that as well. :)
