Character and their Money-Do You Impose Limits?

I get to have the final say on their equipment when it is chosen. I let them have certain things at certain levels but unless there is story line motiviation i put a big stop to those spending 10billion GP's on a +5 vorbal bane shocking ghost touch ultra kamayamaya sword of death

I use the rules in the ELH on page 23. No item may cost more than 25% of the character's starting cash, and no more than three can cost more than 10% starting cash.

That keeps them from being more powerful than the current characters, and they're bound to get beefed up during an adventure anyway...

When I DM and have to add a character at any level I don't put any limits on what they can buy with their starting gold.

I do warn them that this world has plenty of theives and to spend wisely. [Begin] evil laugh [/End]

Use the Npc Gold table in DMG for what they can choose, then w/ the differance in gold from the PC Gold table you choose items. That way, they spend a good portion of their $$$, but you still have some say.
