Character Generator Software Concept

Janik: okay ... user ease of use is of utmost importance ... I am sure there is a way to do it, but it's not something for discussion, was just a comment about my "peeve" about software in general.

dvvega,
I agree with you on redundant data. As a VB/SQL developer I try to reduce as much data redundancy as possible. Doing calculations on the fly has little to no impact on preformance of an app so there is no true advantage to storing pre-calculated data.

One thing that I wondered about with the delete feature - if I delete a spell, say, CLW, what about magic items that are created using that spell? Logically, they should all disappear too. So, Potions and Wands of CLW would have to be "removed" from the files too.

Sounds - complex.

Or what about feat chains - remove cleave, and great cleave should automatically be removed too.

Should a user be warned if removing a feat invalidates the requirements of a prestige class? eg, if I remove Cleave, any prestige class that required the character to have Cleave or Great Cleave could not be used - so should they be deleted too?

This leads to a lot of work.

As for the idea of adding a spell to multiple campaigns, one method I would consider is: create a new camapign based off an existing one. When creating the new one the user would be asked if they are to be kept in sync. If they are and a spell is added/deleted from one campaign the user could then be asked if that should be done in the other. That way it doesn't happen with every addition, but can happen if you request it.

Data redundancy is bad - if you change the data in one place you have to consider the effect in others (just like the delete example above). I hate stored calculations - I've seen too many problems with them - ie, someone changes the original value but doesn't propogate that to the stored value.

Duncan: you've brought up a point that I hadn't even delved into since there was no trigger for it ...

but yes ... items based on a deleted spell would essentially not exist in a campaign world OR you might get a replacement option (replace CLW with ...) as a requirement etc.

And the feat chain thing is gold ... so how about addressing these issues in software out there?

Campaign Suite does the things that you mention here, and many - many - 3rd party publications are already available both officially and unofficially. it has editors for the classes/races/etc so you don't need to do any file editting.

You can find CS at www.twinrose.net

Thanks :)

A few questions about CS....

- What are the system requirements for it? I run things with an old laptop (old meaning its woefully behind the times..when not gaming with it, I use it for typing...and thats about it)

- Does it export stat blocks for characters & monsters? and if it does, does it use the d20 Standard Statblock Foundation's format?
